    SAKE ..... never again!!!

Well, my family loves Japanese food / Habachi / etc... so tonight we went out to eat. My wife tried Sake for the first time - a VERY small amount (looked like a fourth of a shot glass full). Less than two hours later, we are in the emergency room, and she has welts and swollen tissue all over the place. She said she felt like her skin was "crawling". Just got back home - 4:18am. My wife is juiced up on all kinds of meds, resting peacefully... or as peacefully as she can. I'm exhausted, but for some reason, can't fall asleep... so I thought I'd complain a bit about it. Anyone else ever have that kind of reaction to rice wine? It's the only thing that we can figure would have caused the reaction, as she is very acustomed to eating / drinking everything else we had tonight.
    All the best,
    Glenn

I remember those days. I have had enough to see other peoples skin crawl....but never my own.

Glad to hear she's OK Glenn.

I've never tried sake, but I've woke up on the floor many times after some Sangria.

We all had fried rice, vegetables, shrimp appetizer, and shrimp habachi. I had steak with my shrimp, and my son had chicken. Kathy had chicken and shrimp. Since none of us had a reaction to the shrimp, which we all ate, and my son didn't react to the chicken either, we kind of ruled out the food, as nobody else had a reaction, and she has eaten all that before. The only other thing that she had last night that we didn't partake in (We didn't do the Sake either - just my wife), was hot tea, which my wife always gets with her meal. That is why we were leaning towards the Sake as the culprit last night.
    She's doing fine this morning.

Could have been any of it. I too once had an anaphylatic reaction from food, and everyone ate all the same food and I was the only one affected. Just depends on ones body chemistry. Could be anything from the food itself, to a different seasoning used, to the oil it was cooked in, or something left on the grill/skillet. Glad she only suffered the hives, some people's airway begins to shut down from this.

Actually, the doctor that saw her last night said "you have a good husband" when she told them that I made her take Benadryl and put the Benadryl gel on the skin irritation right before I drove her to the ER. They said it probably kept her from getting much worse - like what you are speaking of with the airway closing off. Hey... I have my moments!

I've never seen that kind of reaction from sake but it is not uncommon for someone to have a seafood allergy and react the way you describe. I've even seen it in people that have eaten seafood for years without problems and then that one time it hits them. You did the right things and your wife is very fortunate. Some reactions can be much worse.

Can't say that Sake ever did that to me, but I remember waking up with bumps all over my face after drinking Suntori whiskey one Chistmas Eve in Japan, but the bumps might have come when I fell off the bar stool, not exactly sure?

Sure am glad she's feeling better now.

</TD></TR></TABLE> I used to go out all the time with a close friend eat steamed shrimp oysters etc. one night bad hives hit him and then start having trouble breathing. Rushed him to the ER. seafood reaction. He can no longer eat seafood. But he did not get sick. maybe peanut oil. who knows. maybe the sake was bad.
