State trooper hit, killed by driver on U.S. 58 near Emporia
SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY VA– A State Police trooper was struck by a passing car and killed today as he stood on the side of U.S. 58 after issuing a summons to a motorist.
Robert A. Hill Sr., 42, of Courtland, was outside of his unmarked patrol car about six miles east of Emporia, said State Police spokesman Sgt. D.S. Carr. Hill, a 19-year veteran of the force, had just finished writing the summons at 1:10 p.m. when a 1995 Cadillac driven by Lowell J. Carrington, 84, struck him and sideswiped the 2002 Mercury driven by Megan N. Cottrell of Virginia Beach.
The trooper died at the scene, Carr said. Cottrell had minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Carrington, of Franklin, was flown to Sentara Norfolk General. He was listed late today in fair condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Vicky Gray.
Both westbound lanes of U.S. 58 were closed for about five hours this afternoon and traffic was diverted to a single eastbound lane while police cleared the accident.
Carr said that Hill was a respected trooper, active in his community and church.
“He’d go out and collect toys for kids at Christmas,” Carr said. “He was an all-around good guy.”
The accident is still being investigated.
