    Virginia State Trooper Killed today

Will be going to another officers Funeral this week...

State trooper hit, killed by driver on U.S. 58 near Emporia

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY VA– A State Police trooper was struck by a passing car and killed today as he stood on the side of U.S. 58 after issuing a summons to a motorist.

Robert A. Hill Sr., 42, of Courtland, was outside of his unmarked patrol car about six miles east of Emporia, said State Police spokesman Sgt. D.S. Carr. Hill, a 19-year veteran of the force, had just finished writing the summons at 1:10 p.m. when a 1995 Cadillac driven by Lowell J. Carrington, 84, struck him and sideswiped the 2002 Mercury driven by Megan N. Cottrell of Virginia Beach.

The trooper died at the scene, Carr said. Cottrell had minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Carrington, of Franklin, was flown to Sentara Norfolk General. He was listed late today in fair condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Vicky Gray.

Both westbound lanes of U.S. 58 were closed for about five hours this afternoon and traffic was diverted to a single eastbound lane while police cleared the accident.

Carr said that Hill was a respected trooper, active in his community and church.

“He’d go out and collect toys for kids at Christmas,” Carr said. “He was an all-around good guy.”

The accident is still being investigated.

Robert was a long time friend. We both grew up here, were the same age, always kept involved with each others careers. I'm just numb and angry. Some days just suck.

Sorry about the loss.I was on a volunteer rescue squad for about 8 years and while on duty we had 3 members hit and 2 officers hurt.People see accidents and try to "rubber neck" too much and this sort of thing happens. I just wish there was something that could be done to make people pay attention and give police and fire and rescue the safe room needed to operate. Our prayers will be with the family and friends !

A new law in NC is if a car is pulled over you have to switch lanes or slow way down, hopefully you guys will pass something like this soon. Also there are signs on all the major roads reminding people of this every few miles.

    I was his nurse

I am writing a book of my years in USA ( 2000-2004 )

And I saw that old man I took care of in 2001 had killed this man, so sad story.

I think it's bad of the old man family to not take care of their old father when he is mental ill.

I lived with Lowell the whole summer of 2001 and it was close he had killed me too. He had a multi personality disorder.

His sons are very wealthy men

Glenn Carrington is the National Tax Director
    for Client Services

The other son is the manager for Virginia water.

    One son is a Police

They all could have put in their father in a nursery home when they knew he was mental sick.

Instead did it killed a nice man.

It could have been me that was killed because I had to run by help of the Police from him when he should kill me with a riffle.

For me wasn't this a surprise, he was a ticking bomb.

Shame on his family to not taken care of their father !!!

Re: Virginia State Trooper Killed today (Purple Haze)

God bless his family and sorry about the loss of a good friend Greg. Every time I issue a summons on the side of the road I think of danger that I am in by standing along the road with people trying to figure out what I'm doing while their going 55 or 60 mile an hour. Everybody keep this in mind the next time that your speeding. Not only are you being a risk to everybody else on the road, but if you get stopped by the police, you are putting the officer in a lot of danger as well.
