2001 150 ficht outboard motor question.

Last week I ran my oil tank low about a inch or a little more from the bottom of tank the no oil light came on not the low oil light . While driving it the motor stuttered and almost died with no oil light on with alarm going it would only do a certain rpm before stuttering again.A mechanic told me that I might have air in the line from running low and to pump primmer bulb a bunch of times it should help but it still does it. It will run awhile 3 to 5 miles then sometimes act up. I turn key off then restart it it resets itself and will run full speed for 3 to 5 miles sometimes more then alarm sounds. This has happened the last two times out.Has anyone seen this problem?I want to thank anyone in advance for any helpful suggestions or remedies.

I had a 02 225 ho that would do the same thing I didnt run the tank low it just started it and I could not figure it out so I got fed up and repowered with an etec 225ho I heard that it could have been a sensor that shows the oil pressure and if it doesnt see the pressure it goes into safe mode so you might want to check that sensor.
