    USCG on Gaston

    If you are fishing Gaston, make sure you have all your required safety gear in order. This weekend the USCG has been out there stopping everyone in sight. They stopped me Friday and lit me up again today before they realized they stopped me yesterday.

    Just general safety stuff. Life jackets, throwable cushion, fire extinguisher, signaling device, registration ect.

    They also lectured at me saying I should have slowed down when I ran under the Eatons Ferry bridge even though it is not a marked no wake zone.

    Did they check to see if you had a boat safety course certificate?

    Pretty sure the horn qualifies as a signalling device.

    Horn or whistle for signalling device. They asked if I had completed a boater safety course but didnt check for any kind of documentation or anything.

    In a storage box when they stopped me. I didnt get a citation but they did say it needed to be out. I kept it wedged up under the console the rest of Friday and Saturday. Never had that issue with NC wildlife.

    Simple. Right before you fall out of the boat you throw the cushion. Lol. Or maybe they should just have a bunch of cushions staged all over.
    It is a pretty dumb requirement IMO.
    I just use it as a seat cushion on top of my driver's seat. Being tall and old, it allows me to get up from the seat easier.

    I was told by NC game wardens, that the throw cushion was in case I came up on someone in distress it would be readily accessible to throw to the....

    Tom,

    I can see their point but they don't understand the issues of trying to contain an accessible throw cushion running down the lake at 70+ MPH!
    I keep mine inside at the top of the compartment behind the drivers seat for quick access.
