    1997 Ranger Trail Trailer Plug

    Hey,

I have a 1997 Ranger and my 5 pin trailer plug has an extra 2 pin plug attached to it. Anyone know what it is for? I had not noticed it until I changed out a tail light and pulled it up from the tongue checking the wires. When I bought the boat the guy did tell me the surge brakes were disconnected. I have an easy 20 minute ride to the lake so no issues with the brake not engaged, yet.

    Thanks,
    Mike

The extra 2pin plug is a release for the trailer brake when backing up. If you’ve been able to backup with out it hooked up then you likely need to have the brakes serviced because they’re not working very well. You can check brake fluid level and see if it’s low. If it’s real low and sucked air you will need to bleed them to get them working correctly.

Where is the other end of the plug, somewhere in the tongue I assume? Thanks for the help.

look at the back of the coupler on top behind where you can turn the lockout, there is a solenoid that closes so you can back up. if it is not hooked to the truck it would be hard to back up. I went to napa and just cot a 2 wire plug and changed it after the first one got corroded. and it hooks to the back up lite circuit.
