Remote oil tank cap issues again

    <2B093180 model is 1251P73BD>

I have a 2015 250 hp pro XS in 2017 the remote tank on the engine cap started leaking because it was loose, when checked it was stripped out and would of stay tight, mercury replaced it under warranty the dealer told me it was a common issue, I have started having the same issue again ……are others having or had this issue?

part two has anyone changed this tank out? It seems pretty simple but I am wondering if there is something special that needs to be done that I don’t know about?

Got get a small rubber bailer plug and throw the threaded Mercury cap in the garbage.
I’m not sure on the size, I keep several in my boat for cooler drains

Joe is there anything tricky in replacing the tank? Is it simply pull the hoses and wires off unbolt, bolt on the new tank reconnect every and refill the tank?

well I purchased two of these today and tried both but as you can see in the pictures it still leaked slower but still leaked ?
the oil was coming up through the bolt threads not out the rubber seal area

That's the same thing we were seeing with the ones folks tried up here. Suspect that "all bailer plugs aren't created equal".

Tank replacement is pretty straightforward- strongly recommend an oil pump prime be done after the replacement is installed.

If you would, please take a moment to review the Announcements at the top of the Forum, and be sure to provide the REQUIRED Info (serial number) when posting. Thanks!

sorry about that, my serial number is 2B093180 model is 1251P73BD

when you said you recommend an oil pump prime are you referring to making sure i am getting flow in the hose coming from the main tank to the new engine mounted tank?

i thought i would reconnect the lower hose, fill the tank manually through the small port and leave the upper hose off and directed into a small bottle then start the engine, when i have oil flow into the bottle from the hose i would turn off the engine then connect the upper fill hose with the small fill cap still off or very loose i then start the engine and bleed the rest of the air out of the tank , when bleed tighten the fill cap ...complete

    does this sound right?

pump prime is preformed with computer diagnostics to ensure no air is present in lines and all lines are full of oil and delivering it to respective ports usually done at dealer level

You can remove and install new tank easily enough, but you should have a oil pump prime done by the dealer after installing new tank.

OR invest in a Diacom system so you can do some items yourself.

well I was able to stop my leak, 3/8” pipe plug, cupped washer, O ring, and wrap of Teflon pipe tape
I ran on the lake last night a few hours and got home pulled the cowling and the tank was still clean no leak
I should be getting my new tank delivered Saturday but this let me fish last night with out making another oil mess

Hope you did not run a pipe tap in that hole! Very small particles in the tank could cause very big problems.

    OilTankCap.jpg

The guy that built me an Opti last year makes these little aluminum caps. They're slightly oversized. Apparently, the OEM caps start leaking all of
    the time.
