Have the week after Christmas off and was thinking of spending a couple of days up there. Is it a decent park to camp in? How is the fishing? Any hazards on the lake? Thanks for any help.

Hi Tom, only been to Gibbons for day use but the facilities have always looked well maintained. There was good vegetation (all pads) on the ramp side, coves at the dam side & either side of the power plant inlet. The water is down 3'-4' now though. Best fishing so far was the power plant but they busted everything I had. Try a flippin rig heavy enough to do some weeding and crawl across the pads. There are some pigs in there. Watermelon & baby bass colors worked before. If the water temp is down hit the plants discharge, the water will be warmer. There are hazards, pretty well marked, mostly in the upper lake but I think that was all catfish country. HTH, have fun![]()
Thank-you Karl for being so detailed! Depends on the forecast, but thinking of hauling the boat and family up there for a couple of days to tent camp. Boys are 7 & 8 and have never been tent camping....I am ashamed and want to remedy that. I appreciate the info.

Glad to be of assistance. Good thing to get the boys out tenting. Y'all should have a blast weather permitting.

Yes, Bill, they are .. but have no idea how it would affect folks who are camping there.

We like fishing Gibbons- it's only about 45 mins to an hour for us. Let us know if you do get to it .. perhaps we'll join you if your family is comfortable with the arrangement.

The pad fields died off a while back and even the dead decaying stems are fully gone. Bass are not typically where the pads used to be now.
With the low water there is not a bullrush, floating hycyinth or any edge vegetation to be found anywhere. Creeks are not navigable. Grass and hydrilla are non-existant. They even removed the old fallen fishing piers which used to hold fish. You have stumpfields and humps/points left to fish along with the water inlet and outlet areas.
Same stumps are only major boating hazards and with low water, you will know where they are. West side has some shallow sanded banks reaching well out from shore, but most GPS units already show these shallow areas.

Dang, haven't been there since the water level drop, might have been June. Sad to hear about the conditions now![]()
