    94 Johnson 115 wierd rattle.

Hi guys, I was running a 94 Johnson 115 on a Ranger R70 as it runs great. It has this wierd rattle coming out of it. I thought it might be the steering linkage but it checks out. Doesn't sound like a rod knock or a piston, but I be danged if I can figure it out. Any ideas? I think it's near the top and not in the leg, but goin gdown the lake who knows?

I guess it will either go away, stay the same, or get worse.

Re: 94 Johnson 115 wierd rattle. (Offshore Angler)

I heard a weird noise from my 70 OMC after I got it out of the shop one time. I couldn't figure what it was either, it was a soft tapping noise, and I suspected a rod knock issue, howver, I only heard the noise when under way.

Turns out it was the lower unit, and it locked up tighter then a drum, and kept the engine hung in gear, so I just knew it was the powerhead. Either way, it was still expensive, and I had to get a tow back to the ramp.

See if your fluid is good in the lower unit, or it metal comes out, or if the shaft has play in it.

Also, I could only hear the noise on the water, not on land with the hose connected.

Does it rattle all the time or only when you let off the throttle?

Pretty much all the time. I'm going to put it on my dyno and either fix it or blow it up.

I am thinking more gearcase than powerhead. I think it went away for a little bit on a slow deceleration.

A soft tapping noise is a great description.

You could pull the bearing carrier out of the gearcase and have a look at the gears.

Don't get to far from the ramp. I bet its the Lower unit.
