Anyone here fish Choke Canyon recently?

It's been a while since I had time to get out and fish, but with the temps and no rain lately, I'm wondering what Choke Canyon is looking like before I make that 2 hour drive.

Anyone been there lately that can shed some light on water conditions, level, fish activity, etc...?

Any info would be very appreciated. Thinking of heading out Saturday morning, throwing some topwater, and calling it a day before the sun fully fries my brain.

103 today on my truck thermometer here in San Antonio!

    All the best,
    Glenn

I went out 2 Sundays ago, I got there before the gates open @0530 and was one of the first to launch. I fished buzzbaits and a Sammy early and caught a nice limit biggest went about 4.5-5lbs, but had some Serious Blowups that just missed the buzzer. I got off the lake around 1100 as it was blazin hot and no breeze. Fished died once the sun came up and only caught a few small fish in 15-20'. Early is best unless you like to fish really deep 30+ it was just too hot. Before I ventured out that far.

I was down there last weekend. I'm just the opposite of Chris. I didn't leave the boat ramp until 1000. I mostly fished the 3-8ft range. I caught about 8 fish, with the biggest at 4.5lbs. All but the 4.5 were in or near the grass. I have never caught any big fish in the morning on that lake. All the good size fish I've caught were in the mid-afternoon. The biggest fish I caugh last weekend, was around 1300 (1p.m.).

I think you could catch fish either deep or shallow. You just have to fish your strengths.

Re: Anyone here fish Choke Canyon recently? (utinator)

Thanks for the replies. I'm headed out there tomorrow morning. Plan to be there at gate opening on South Shore and fishing the morning at least. I just want to get the heck out of the house. It's been a while since I ran my boat and fished.

utinator - my "strength's" have always been shallow grass; however, Choke Canyon drives me nuts because they are never where I expect them to be. I really want to get into fishing deeper water, but I normally get frustrated with it after not catching anything all day and just go back to beating the banks or running the grass lines.

How's the water level? Lack of rain affect it much?

    All the best,
    Glenn

Got there this morning and waited for the gate to open. Wind was howling pretty good. I picked up one right away on a buzzbait (3 feet deep), but had to leave the area to find something more sheltered. Good sized rollers keeping me off my spot. Finished out my limit on Senko's and a soft plastic swimbait in the grass (3-5 feet), but that was it - 5 fish. After the sun came up, they stopped biting. Wind was beating me up pretty good. Called it a day at 10am. Just got home.

It was worth it though. I haven't been fishing in a while, so I was happy to at least catch a limit this morning.

    All the best,
    Glenn
