    New Tracker Pro 170

    Hello all,

Looking to get a new Tracker Pro 170. I live next to a 10hp limit lake and since putting a kicker on it seems to be a hard / warranty breaking endeavor I am going with the 9.9. Bummer for other lakes I may want to fish but ohh well.
I have not fished from a boat since the 90s and things were a bit simpler then as I get into researching trolling motors and fish finders.

My thought was to upgrade the edge tot he 55lb terrova with Helix 7 or 9. I heard 80lbs might be too much thrust for this boat. My Question is would I need battery upgrades from factory for that setup? If so any suggestions?

Also, I have heard that the boat will not plane with a 9.9 which is also a bummer but just wondering if anyone else has a 170 with a 9 to tamper my expectations. I am assuming 7-10mph max.

    Thanks

No such thing as too much electric trolling motor thrust--room for batteries is the only limitation.

I fish several 10HP restricted lakes and when I got rid of my fiberglass bass boat and 12' jon boat with a 9.9 HP, I got a Tracker PT 170 TX with a 9.9 HP. Mine won't get on plane and the max speed is about 7 mph.
I first rigged it with a 36V Motor Guide Tour, then later changed that motor to 24V to have less battery weight to make it easier to get off of submerged stumps. I have since went to LiFePO4 batteries and a 24V Ultrex.

I also add a transom 24V trolling motor when fishing electric-only waters and have two other LiFePO3 batteries for that.

I read some think the 80lbs thrust might be causing hull cracks in the front and that BT won't warranty it. but it was the internet so not sure how true it is.

How many batteries would I need for a Terrova 55 or 80 would you say?

Trove 55 is a 12 volt system, 80 is a 24 volt system. So 1 battery for 55 and two for 80. You could also get a 24 volt lithium and just run one battery for the 80. I would go 80 and lithium.

A 12v 55 lb thrust motor is plenty for that boat but a 24v 80 lb thrust will work fine and won't cause any problems. I wouldn't get a Terrova though, hate how the foot pedal works, and it is a pain to stow and deploy compared to one with a cord. No that boat won't even come close to planing with a 9.9 on it.

Ah i see now. was confused on the voltage. Yeah sounds like the 80 with a 24 lithium would be the way to go.
Curious if you have tried a whale tale and if it helped at all with planeing or are those just hype?

Was thinking of a combo like this?

Roughly how long of run time can you expect with one 24v lithium with a 60 ah vs 100 ah

My buddy at the lakehouse has a 9.9 on his Tracker 17'. It is slow to say the least but does get around pretty good. He went with a 12V Motorguide battery and seems to really like it.

However, I think if I want to have the Helix 7 that requires 12v... so could I just run 2 12volt po4 batteries and hook the terrova up to both but the helix up to one?

Trolling motor should always have it's own battery supply with nothing else hooked to it.

I see, that makes sense. Thanks for all the info. Assuming that also means I need 2 different chargers. Man, why are all my hobbies expensive lol

They are only as expensive as you let them be. You don't need lithium batteries, Walmart everstarts have worked fine for me for several years.

The shaft length on that TM seems too long, I have a 16 1/2 ft. Lund with a 24v Fortrex (52") and a 2ft. chop is all it can handle, that Pro 170 comes with a 45lb. 12v, 45" shaft TM as stardard ?

Ended up going a different way after going to the boat show. Went with a crestliner storm 1600 that will come with a Talon, helix 7 si and terrova 80 with 9.9 all dealer installed. Got a great boat show price. Really liked the quality and the all aluminum no wood construction and tbh it wasn't that much more expensive.

    Sounds good.
