    G2 vs Merc

I have a Ranger Z520 with a G2 250. I’m about to buy a 520r with a 250 proxs. Have any of you made this move? What sort of gains or losses will I see? I have had great luck with the G2.

g2 better mpg I bet --same speeds or really close. g2 might be better on hole shot and mid range but the merc is a mid-range beast also. like my merc 4s but still wish I had a G2 and a company behind them still

    I traded in my 2018 Z520L with a G2 for my current 2022 Z520R with the Merc.

I bought my 2018 brand new and babied it. I had around 150hrs on it when the electronic steering assembly went out on it ($8k repair). Granted it was under warranty and they did fix it, but with all the Evinrude drama and my dealer stating that it was like pulling teeth to get paid from Evinrude (and that he wasn't going to work on Evinrudes anymore) I decided to cut my losses and wipe my hands clean of the G2. My G2 also left me stranded 6hrs from home one trip, thank God for Lockman's in Detroit, MI, they had me in and out in no time.

I like the R better than the L, rides a little better imo and I can make a sharp turn at medium to high speeds and it not blow out. The R does require more setting "finesse" with the trim and jackplate at 60+ to avoid chine walking. Speeds and hole shot are roughly the same, I've seen 74mph with two people.

I had some minor cosmetic issues with my R that Ranger quickly fixed. The Ranger Ride system (which is a Lowrance product that has been in the 600 series/walleye boats for a while before being introduced to the bass boats) has given many people issues. I had the original software version back in January 2022 with fuel reading issues, upgraded to the 2.03 version and it's worked great since (I think it's up to 2.07 now). There are some reported issues with transoms, but it's not wide spread to my knowledge. The heated steering wheels have been recalled also, there was a bad batch of those.

Overall, I'm glad I dumped the G2 and I'm very happy with my current rig.

    Good luck

It sounds like the Merc might be a little faster in the end.

That's an easy choice, Mercury all day.

I don't know what other people are talking about
    I own a 2019 200g2 and a 2023 pro xs 250 and granted the G2 is on a R93 ranger and merc is on a 520 r
My first impressions are the merc is a big heavy pig.
The G2 feels like a sports car and the merc like a big old heavy caddy with nitouskit for top end
But the G2 is like a nimble quick Corvette.

The problem with the G2 in the future is parts availability. Hard to get worked on in
some places also. I thought they were a good motor but…..

Probably the R93 being over 300 pounds lighter makes a significant difference along with the shorter length.

I absolutely love my G2 but if you’re going to buy a new Ranger you’re going to get a Merc. I’ve hated mercury for years but that’s just how it is. I’ve studied this motor for a pretty good whole and it seems pretty solid compared to the optimax. They still have lower unit issues there are a few outliers that have major motor issues but not much. I’m certain that my old boat will out perform the new one on hole shot and top end. I’m certain because I’ve passed more than one mercury 4stroke powered 520. I’ll miss the G2, I was just hoping someone would be able to tell me the difference from experience.

I’ve ran both a G2 and a mercury 4-stroke on a 520c, currently running the Mercury. The G2 will be 2-3 mph faster and get noticeably better fuel mileage.

I’ve had the same experience as Travis. The 4-stroke Mercury has some problems that may or may not pop up for each individual engine, but is a decent engine overall. Not as fast/quick as the G2, and especially at lower or idle speeds the G2 got much better fuel economy. On stop-and-go fishing where you restart the engine 20+ times a day, the V8 seems to use a significant amount of fuel just in starting.

I just wanted to follow up now that I’ve finished the first 2 hours of break in on the new boat. I’m sure I can get a little more out of the merc but I’m disappointed. My 08 z520 with a G2 will absolutely eat this thing. The particular lake I was at is a higher elevation lake which I know the G2 ecm compensates while the merc does not. The new boat is completely empty other that 3/4 tank of fuel and me. The water temp was 39 air temp was 54 and the new boat was 5 mph slower. The 520r is a very nice boat but a little disappointing that mercury is not as strong as I had hoped.

Should have got a boat with a Yamaha SHO then.

Yeah that's the crappy thing about Tritons and Rangers since JM bought them, only available with Mercury now. I wish Ranger, Triton, Nitro and Tracker gave you the option of Yamaha or Mercury, they would sell a lot more if they did.

Get the Merc as parts and mechanics are everywhere usually. The 2 places I have service performed will not longer work on any Etec.

Went thru same thing in '18/'19 when I got my new Ranger. Was going to order without a motor, rigged for a SHO, then go to a Yamaha dealer who specializes in repowers & have a SHO installed. It would have been what I really wanted, but would have cost me 7-10 grand more because of trying to get away from company "groups" . Wanted to stay Yamaha after i switched to them because of 2001 Optiflop nightmare. Probably same situation for someone who would want a Skeeter with a Merc now.

You could have got a Yamaha through the factory through the 2021 model year. I did.....

Another JM basher talking out their backside. Yamaha's were available up until about 3 years ago. Lovely covid supply chain issues made new Yamaha's virtually non existent.
