    Got a head scratcher

Ok guys, here the situation I am in:

I bought a 92 Johnson 200 HP from Aaron Jones here on the boards. He has been great with helping me repower my Stratos, and after fixing some lower unit problems I think I'm close to being back up and running again...there is just one thing that is giving me trouble.

When I launch the boat in the morning it will crank and crank and crank but will not fire at all. My starting procedure is to shift all the way forward and pump the bulb hard, put in neutral, turn key to on, hold key in for eight second, release, turn key...after doing this for 10 minutes or so i get frustruated and put the trolling motor down and fish around the ramp. After 30 minutes ill try again and it after some more cranking and cranking it will finally start up...it is then good to go the rest of the day. Start on first crank every time

Battery is good, Had it tested at Autozone under load...I am getting spark...fuel bulb stays hard. Also i am premixing if this makes a difference with fuel/air ratio when starting...

Any Ideas. I can get the model and Serial #'s tommorrow if you need, but this is really strange and I have a feeling it's some thing simple because the motor runs great once it starts for the whole day...Any help would be great

P.S It smokes excessive the when it finally starts...almost like oil is puddling somewhere when it is tilted up when trailering making it harder to get it to fire thru the oil

    Thanks

Try trimming the motor under some. Try it at level to tucked in. Also check your quick start sensor it is on the port head. The sensor has 2 wires on it one tan and one white with a black trace.

The smoke I'm sure is the oil, just curious if you are pooring the oil in first? Then shooting gas on top of it ?

I had some bad gas, and the guy who sold me the boat had to go and put fresh gas on top of 2 yr old gas, thinking it would 'kick it' as he put it. It didn't, and had problems, but hey I got an extra $400 off the boat.

Anyways, it may be oil just settling, I would always make sure and put the oil in first and hit it with gas to stir it real well, maybe even put half in, then half gas, then the rest of the oil, then the rest of the gas.

Just throwing it out there. You might already be doing that.

You can just give it a swift kick too, sometimes that works.

tilt the motor down so gas will flow back into your motor instead of pouring out the front of the carbs. pump your bubble. start with the choke on until it fires. if it goes dead hit the start again but do not choke.

and after it starts be ready to push the choke in a couple more times till the engine settles down and idles right.

pump primer bulb until firm, advance throttle 1/4-1/3, push in on key and crank same time holding in on key, once started let off key, if engines starts to die push in on key, pushing in on key opens valve and pumps fuel in primer lines at each pulse of fuel pump(by passes carbs)

Thanks guys...followed all your sugesstions and it fired up all week...I think I was flooding the motor when I was opening the throttle and then priming...That was the previous owners recommendation.

    Thanks Again!
