This Question used to be on a college interveiw application

A man is in a rowing boat floating on a lake, in the boat he has a brick. He throws the brick over the side of the boat so as it lands in the water. The brick sinks quickly. The question is, as a result of this does the water level in the lake go up or down?

When it's in the boat, it is contributing to the weight of the larger floating boat, displacing more water than when it is sitting on the bottom of the lake, displacing its own smaller volume.

My guess is that when the brick is thrown out, the boat will float higher, and the displacement of water caused by the area of the bottom of the boat will be less and the lake level will go down. If the lake is bigger than a bathtub, the change in the level will not be measureable.
