    old Johnson motor question.....

A guy I work with just gave me an old Johnson outboard. The only info that I can find is a small plate up on the left side of the engine and it reads as follows

    672938
    TD 20

I assume it is a two horse engine.... It has gas in the tank and I had a very hard time getting the cap off. Some of the threads actually pealed off and are inside the tank. The gas in the tank is definitely bad. I turned the prop by hand and it seams to have good compression. I don't really have time to play with it right now but I will get the gas out of the tank. Any info is much appreciated. Also, what would you use to clean the gas tank? I was thinking carb. cleaner to start?

    Thanks,
    Tim

It is a 1963, 5.5hp motor. carb cleaner would be a good start.

A TD-20 is a twin cylinder 5hp from about 1946-49 or so. It was a super running fishing motor in its day.

The fuel oil mix was 16:1, and it used a special set of points that uses a push pin to open them. The water pump was an eccentric rubber "donut" with a tab on it. The non-shift gearcase uses #105 grease, not oil.

Hey SEAHORSE, can you tell me what size the gas cap thread is? I had to use plyers to get the original cap off. The more I turned it, the tighter it got. Somehow the material it is made from swelled and I can even get it back on.

    Thanks,

Sorry, I don't know. I haven't played with one of those models for many many years. Try contacting Twin City Outboards near Minneapolis for parts.
