We got married on derby day 1975. It’s a national event.

We went to the track on Wednesday. Derby too expensive for me, but not too bad during the week. Good time.

RIP Evinrude 1907-2020
My immediately family loves horse racing. I'm the outsider who only pays a little attention but I have watched every single KY Derby since I was a kid. I can honestly say that last years derby was my favorite to watch. The winner broke dead last and was mid pack when they entered the top of the stretch. He managed to find a hole and change lanes not once but twice going doing the stretch and ran down the leader. The biggest advantage he had was the lead horses had a blistering pace. He laid back and had energy when it came time to make the stretch run.
My second favorite is the year Pat Day rode Lil E.Tee. Although the horse was not a real famous horse its the jockey I like the most. I had to google search because I could not remember the date but I was at Churchill Downs June 20, 1984 with my dad and brother. That date is when pat Day rode 7 winners in one day. I was 14 at the time. I remember being at walkway where the jockeys would enter to go to and from their changing room. I ask Pat for his autograph and he said "kid I'm in a hurry but if you meet me here after the next race you can get one" I ended up having my brother bet $2 to win on the horse Pat was riding and it won and paid a massive 2.80 back. I never cash the ticket but I got it autographed by Pat and I still have it.
IMO... the Derby sucks if your a real fan of horseracing. It's more of a spectacle than a race. Kind of like how the Super bowl is more about the event instead of the actual game. If you want to see some good horse racing go Churchill or Keenland when they are having some high stakes races but not on Derby day or Breeders Cup day because more about the event instead of good ol racing.
