I got a 200 99 johnson and just noticed its leaking milky colored gear lube from around the prop. I guess the prop shaft seal is gone, how hard and costly is this to replace??

Its not hard to do but, you need to make sure thats all thats leaking....IE: pressure and vacuum test.....Do it yourself and the parts are around 30 bucks.
I just pulled the prop and blow out ring off and took a look, looks like there is 2 seals?? Im not sure, never done this before. The leak is defently comming from the saft. What all do you have to pull off to get the seals out, the first on closest to the prop just came right off in my hands? Do the two bolts above and below the shaft need to be taken out? HELP?
Yes, remove the tab bolts...one above the prop shaft and one below, you will then need a 2 jaw puller or a slide hammer with a hook on it, pull the bearing carrier out, while its out trim the motor down and slide the reverse gear out so you can look at the teeth on the pinion and forward.
You will have to pry the other seal out....the new seals go back in....inside seal lip down, the outside seal lip out, also get the large O-ring for the bottom of the carrier.
Thanks, dosent sound too bad, I just dont have a puller nor a slide hammer. I best wait till I can get my hands on one before I start?? Also gotta get that milky dope out first right? Again thanks Rusty.
Yes, you will need one or the other to get the carrier out, go ahead and change the lube but dont run it until you get it fixed......It will just fill with water again.![]()
I got a puller at work but its big, If i can get it to work, do i push against the end of the shaft to pull the carrier out?
Yes, just make sure you don't damage the threads on the shaft.![]()
Oh I know better. So i just need to invert the jaws and see if it will fit and pull against the outside lip of the carrier and she will slide out? Dose it go back in easy? do I need a mallet to nock it back in? Also is there any tricks to getting the shaft out to inspecting the saft teeth like you said?
Just get the puller as close as you can to the webs inside the carrier and pull it out, Salt water will make this a bit tougher.
You will need a mallet to knock it back in.
The prop shaft will not come out.
Once you have the carrier out, trim the motor as far down as you can, tucked under the boat helps, slide the reverse gear out and you will be able to see the pinion and forward gear, the reason you should check them is something caused a build up of pressure to have pushed the seals out, if the teeth are chipped or missing on the gears this would be a good time to find out.
I just changed the lube a couple of months ago and went fishing fri. night at a local lake that has a steam plant with some pretty hot water, but i doubt that that would affect the seals, never has before. The inside one looks like it has a tear in it. So I guess what im getting at is it not normal for these seals to go out form time to time?
Its not unheard of, I just want you to be sure there is no damage to the gears, if it is just the seals leaking the water in the case would have pushed the seals out.
Carrier is out, gears look good, seals are shot! I kinda messed the inside edges of the carrier up while trying to get it out, maybe i didnt hurt nothing. I had to put the prop on with nut, and yank on it a bit to get it back moving, for some reason the slide hammer got it moving but then it froze on me, the prop thing got it really commin out then the slide hammer finished the job. Hope that wasnt the wrong way to go about it.
Thanks
