The partys over for TEE junior

My son Garret completed school last month and will have an Associates Degree in Aplied Science / Process Technology. Geared towards an Operator at a refinery but can apply towards anything that involves a Process. Gas, oil, power, water, poop, etc. Word was the local plants typically hire after the first of the year. Well now that he is ready to go to work, no one is currently hiring . I quit payin for his gas two weeks ago and been on his ass pretty good and suggested he find J. O. B. somewhere. He goes to work in the mornin for a Pipeline company as a laborer, 7 days a week he says, and was told to bring some rubber boots . Although I've been pretty much a hard ass about things lately and tellin him I was ready to get him off my payroll, I now have that "hope he don't get hurt and things go easier for him than they did for me" feeling.

It will be good for him, thats how I started as a laborer doing concrete forms and a jackhammer at times. Then moved along to drywall. It made me work harder to get out of the ditches and try to make something of myself. When he gets a better job it should make him want to be good at it so he won't have to go back to the ditches. I know when I finally got my tool belt off, I worked hard at the office part so I wouldn't have to put them back on.

You are doing it right Troy. You are going through what every dad goes through with a son. He was evidently taught right. He had the brains and ability to go to and complete further education. He will do fine. I think it is great that he puts a little time in the ditches. It will be a good learning experience towards the field he was schooled for. He will also have better understanding of how important the education dad financed is in the game of life. A big congradulations to you, Tracy and Garret.

Like Craig said, you're not going through anything different than the rest of us. Cory spent a couple of years in a couple of different warehouses doing some pretty hard labor, all the time saying, "I want a job like yours, Dad" ... I kept telling him he had to pay his dues, but he never went for that. He figured I started out in management, not knowing I had put in my grunt work a long time before he came around. He went to work for an electrical contractor, which scared the hell out of me cause he never showed that much mechanical aptitude and a hell of a lot less common sense He's put in his dues and now enjoys a good income for his family as the co-owner of a electrical contracting business.

One last little bit of wisdom I've learned, it's easier to get them out of the house than out of you hip pocket ...

Congrats to Garrett, I know he'll make you and Tracy proud.

Just got off the phone with him Bill. Really nice guy, and we had a good talk. The determining factor will be "do you want to work offshore"? It is certainly an option for Garret to consider. I appreciate your help a bunch.

Sure would look good on a resume.

Re: The partys over for TEE junior (Corkpuller)

Thanks for the moral support men I know the labor won't hurt him, it's the only kind of work he's done. I think he's kinda bummed that he has that Degree and there's no one there to hire him immediately and make him instantly rich. Garret's a good respectful kid and is capable of being a hard worker, but I'm here to tell y'all, this generation is something. Most of em seem to think the road to riches comes with a "no problem, no big deal, attitude". These plants start these "kids" out at well over $20 an hour. They think they will immediately own a house, a new pickup, a new boat, on and on. I told him it took me 46 yrs to own a "new" boat and make pretty damn good money....to me anyway. They don't consider all the expenses there are to "live". It will be interesting to see how he progresses the next few years.
AND....if the lil turd wouldn't have thrown away a baseball scholarship he prolly be closing in on a 4 yr degree...PAID FOR. But I'll save that story for the campfire someday.

Bills son told me it costs them over 4K just to hire a new hand, training, etc. So obviously they want to make sure someone is somewhat committed to doing that work. Long hours, away from home a LOT, and all at helpers pay till you earn your keep. My boy would need to think on that pretty hard, I wouldn't want him to go through that and drag up in a month or two. I just don't do people that way.

It would be hard on a young man. Believe or not I do remember when I was that age and it would be hard not to be running with the guys and the GIRLS.

Hey Cork have him contact Certified Customized Staffing and ask for Libby Olsen she is real nice. They are a good head hunting firm and should get on there roll. I have gone through them twice over last few years. Only thing that sucks is alot of the plants have been cutting back and closing the doors. If I hear of an opening through the grape fine before it hits the streets I'll let u know. Been doing the plant operator seen for almost 30 years.
