I am thinking of going to Sam Rayburn in mid to late April. Any tips on where to stay, where to fish, and what to use to catch some nice bass?

Bass Buster Inn is a great place to stay. It's right next to the restaurant called "The Stump". Great food and alcoholic beverages.
Be sure and take some spinnerbaits and rattletraps. White spinnerbaits,,,, red or crawdad colored crankbaits. You will be fishing post spawn for the most part. There will be some late spawners, depending on the weather.
If it rains before you get there and muddies up the water, be sure and use watermelon chartruese laminate worms. I know my dealers order 40 to 80 bags of our watermelon chartruese worms every time it rains there.

Unless you're planning on fishing McDonalds, stay away from Rayburn Apr. 16-17-18. There will be thousands fishing for that Big Bass money. And most places to stay are booked up by now.
