    question for the gear heads

    Hey guys,

I am taking a blown 92 evinrude 200 off my stratos, and I am replacing it with a 92 johnson 200hp...Here are a few questions I have...

    1) What good would it do me to run sythethic? any? or can just run the cheap TW3c. What oil would you recommend for this older motor?

    2) The motor I am putting it on has not been run for a few months...What basic stuff should I do to tune it up? Should I do a shock treatment with seafoam?

    3) Would you guys recommend using seafoam all the time and if so, what ratio?

    4) What the best matainence schedule for this old beast? I know it's an old motor, but I just need it to get me through a few more years of college until I can afford a new one. I don't want to be in this same position 6 months from now so I want to baby it. Any sugesstions for longeveity?

    5) What would you guys do with the evinrude I am taking off it. It has a lot of parts that can be used in case I have trouble from the johnson thats going on there, but I really don't want to store it. Would you part it out, try to unload it to someone for cheap or hang on to it for spare parts?

Thanks for all your input, This is a great place for me to find info cause I am young, stupid and still learning.

Re: question for the gear heads (keepcullin)

pesonally i would use a good quality oil i wouldnt break the bank on a full syn on that motor keep the fuel system clean and check for air leaks around fittings

i would probably keep some parts (ima packrat though) i would keep the entire electrical system its components are prone to break and are very $$$$
    fuel pump if its good
    lower unit

im no tech nut have the same motor and mine gets ran hard 2 days a week and still kickn

Run seafoam in it, you don't have to run it every time, but, I would keep some in there, it will help keep the engine clean internally.

I would keep all the salvageable parts from the blown engine. You never know when you will need some dumb little part that the dealer has to special order.

I would use XD-30 oil, or XD-50 if you can find it in bulk, then go that route. I have also run the Penn semi-synthetic, its pretty good stuff. Run the XD100 if you want the best oil. It makes a diff in how your engine runs too.

It is the best oil I have ever used. It is all I will ever run in my engine.
