    Need help with Evenrude

    Evinrude

This is my first post here and I need help! I have a 1988 XP 150 Evinrude that is extremely hard to start and sometimes will not get on plane. I have replaced all fuel lines and filter, fuel pump, enrichment valve, spark plugs, carb kits and primer bulb. No change. I have had it to two different mechanics with combined 55 years experience. No change except paying labor bills. Primer bulb will not pump up tight. Once it does start, it will start fine all day. I hope there is a good mechanic here that can steer me in the right direction. Thank you, Jerry.

Do you have a manual for that motor?
Has anyone checked the coils? Possibly a bad plug wire?

As stated above....the Guru's will be around soon

    Lightbulb

I started doing my own maintenance on an '85 Evinrude 150 XP, and videos from Matt's Shop on Youtube helped a ton. Just this year alone, I had to replace a primer solenoid, rebuild the fuel pump, and replace fuel lines due to fuel leaks, and on the electrical side, I had to replace a power pack and timer base. Due to carbs removal and reinstall plus timer base replacement, I had to Link and Sync the carbs to get it started and again on the water because I didn't have it quite right due to mechanical slack to make mine start every time; then again you could also have a bad timer base and/or power pack as well, if the problem is electrical. See the videos linked below for guidance to see if the carbs aren't synced up properly since I'm guessing that you had to remove and reinstall the carbs as well. You may also want to find a good service manual for reference, which I also do from time to time.
