    1990 johnson 150gt questions

Has anyone repainted their motor? I know the stuf in the can is not good and heard imron is the way to go with an aluminum oxide primer on lower unit. Anyone have any pictures, techniques, or steps in doing it?

Also i need to replace my gas line and primer bulb as well as the gas lines and filter under the cowling. Any pictures on this as well.
    Many thanks,

Get a BRP bulb and get marine grade hose. I usually get mine at a dealer. Or if in a pinch, I will spend extra for EFI capable fuel line, its much better rubber. IMO.

LJ gave you some good advice on the gas lines . . . as for repainting your engine. Just remember it is preparation for paint that is most important. Now how extensive of a repaint that you plan for your engine?

Thank you kind sir. As soon as the weather warms up around here, I will be tearing into her to replace the water pump and finally get to replace the power head gasket and while I am at it I think I will give her a new paint job just for the stuff and giggles.

    Regards,

Hi and thanks for the information. I plan to repaint the entire engine. My decals are in good to excellent condition. Did you use a paint sprayer or straight out of the can? Mine is a johnson gt and want to stick to the original color. I also have to replace my water pump but waiting for warmer weather too. It looks like your cowl was rough-paint chipping and such. Did you sand it w/ wet sand paper and follow up with smoother grit and what primer did you use, name and coats applied.
    Many thanks, Garland

I removed my engine from the old boat and repainted it in my friend's son's auto body shop and we used base coat clear coat enamel and enamel primer. If you are looking for a professional looking paint job, I suggest that you do the same. However, this time I am going to attempt to do my repaint in a garage at home using urethane enamel with my own equipment. If you do not have the equipment, I recommend using an auto body shop.
When you are ready to do your engine. Contact me and I will walk you through every step but, you will need the right equipment to do the job right.
    Regards,

    Melvin

So did you strip it down all the way to bare... plastic or whatever the cowl is made of?

Do you have to do anything different the painting metal?

No, only sand, feather edge, fill and sand until all scratches are removed. You would only remove all the old finish if it is crazed or checked. If the old finish is generally good, just sand smooth and repaint.
