    trim gauge reading backwards

I have a 1977 Johnson 85HP model number 85ETLR77S. My trim gauge is reading backwards for some reason. I bought the boat last summer so its been doing this ever since Ive owned it. When I trim down, the gauge goes to the up position instead of down and vice versa. Also, the gauge is only reading 3/4 when trimming up and the tilt kicks in so basically the gauge is only moving about 1/4 of its travel. I just got the gauge working recently. I took it out and cleaned up the connections. There is some sort of diode or resister on the back of it...could installing this backwards cause this problem?
Its really not that big of a deal as I have gotten use to how it works but Im just kind of curious why this is doing it or how I could fix it.
    Any ideas?

It could be a mercury trim gauge bought by mistake. They read backwards from the OMC gauges.

Re: trim gauge reading backwards (ChampioNman)

I can only assume the gauge is the original gauge in the boat. Comparing it to the other gauges installed they all look to be the same style and age...if that makes sense. Is there any way to tell if it is a Merc gauge?
