Can anyone tell me whether the diagnostic software for 2003 motors also works for 2004 models? Software is version 1.42b, which is what my 04 factory service manual stipulates. Thanks.

The diagnostic software, version 1.42b will work for any Ficht-type DI from 1997 through 2006.
It will NOT work with E-TEC.

so is the software readily available without being a Dealer? I would like to get it myself.
Yes you don't have to be a dealer to get the software. BUT you have to be a dealer to upgrade MAPS you have to download that from the Temple.
OH, OK I see, I tried to get it over here is Australia and was more or less told "fat chance" I might see if I can get it from the US.
E-bay software is fine and with the cable for $65 you can't go wrong. Just realize you need a diag manual as all you will probably get is the cable and the floppy. 3.5" disk not a CD.

The factory service manual is a must - if you think you can trouble shoot the electrical system on these motors without a very detailed wiring diagram and descriptions of the circuits you are delusional or of Nobel Prize winning material!
The software I found on e-bay comes with the software manual, the interface cable, and both a diskette and a CD. There were several sets avilable for $65-70, don't know what shipping would be worldwide but shouldn't be too much, no weight to speak of.
Be careful with the software from Ebay. That old 1.42 version software needs to run in DOS, so if you dont have a computer that runs on DOS, It will work not work. I went through the same thing, ended up getting the newer version that works much better anyway. Wasted 50 bucks on the ebay stuff.
The one I purchased is Windows based - think most if not all I saw for sale were.
