Funny. I was fishing today and saw a guy- possibly unknowingly but actually it looked more like uncaringly run across a 250yd stretch of 2' or less solid rock bottom outside the channel haulin' ass. I told my uncle "I bet that's one of them guys that say's damn, Percy Priest is dangerous to run"![]()
There should be a good shallow bite then - and I mean really shallow (like stirring mud with the trolling motor). You can catch them on lots of baits - Rat-L-Traps, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and small crank baits. As Dannyphil mentioned above, Shad Raps catch lots of fish on Priest in the spring (the carp color is hard to beat) in a #5 or # 7 with the straight or crooked bill. Get as shallow as your boat will get and then throw toward the bank, holding your rod tip straight up. I call it "scratching rocks".
As mentioned, lots of rock and it is not bouyed very well. Combine that with the fact that they drop the lake about 7' over the winter and it makes it very easy to tear up your boat. Be very careful at the mouth of Stewart's creek (across from Fate Sanders Marina). The bottom / channel isn't where you would expect there and there are several rock piles / rock ridges.
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
Yep, Priest scares me. Last February I was being greedy looking for some extremely shallow bass. I went way up past Fate Sanders to the left up into Spring Creek. I could see the 840 bridge. I was going fast enough to barely stay on pad and I was following the wildly swinging channel (about 3ft deep) using my GPS map and I got too far to the right. BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! Lord make it stop! BAM! BAM! I lost my skeg, bent my prop shaft and ruined the prop. They had dropped the water about 1-2 feet in the the span of a couple days after some rain. No damage to the hull. It was a long ride of shame back to the ramp.

Duane, Is that why I saw you running in and out of Spencer Creek on Old Hickory a few weeks ago with a new 250 pro xs and not a racing model on the allison like before? I was crappie fishing the docks at the mouth of the creek and I was like well, I know that's Duane's boat but that's not the same motor that he used to have. Dang. What us fishermen will do for a fish.

I got some brushpiles on that edge of the channel right there. You gotta run right up against the rock bluff man. When you come out of there and you get just past that little bluff and it gets a little bit wider. There is an enormous stump right out in the middle about 1" underwater, and it's solid. Coming out you should stay to the left of it.

don't think i have ever been at fate sanders boat ramp on a weekend and not seen at least one and most times more than one lower units and props like that one.most of the time someone will be standing there scratching their head saying i've fished here all my life and never knew that big rock was there.
Hey Reid, that was me. I was testing out my engine after having yet another lower unit put on (hit a floater on Cordell Hull back in October).![]()
It's got the same engine I've had on it since I got it.
That day was my first chance to get out on the water and I was seeing if they repaired the prop right and if the lower unit would develop any leaks. I made a few passes in Spencer but I saw there were some folks fishing and I decided to just head out into the river. After I headed out into the main river heading toward the dam, I hit a large piece of floating wood.(there was floating wood everywhere) I got wood splinters up in both 'stats, poppet valve, and pee hole.

Anyway, I'm ready to try it again. . . but not on Priest. With my luck, I'd find the only rock in 5ft of water.![]()

If you see my lower unit out there, will you bring it back? Did I say how much I hate Priest??![]()

I pulled an ear off of someone's prop out of a big ol stump in Fall Creek one day. It was stuck right in the top of it. I wanted it as a conversation piece but I accidentally dropped it in the dang water.
Last time I was on Priest it was really windy with heavy chop. I was getting on plane and watching my GPS and depth finder for the end of a long point. Just as the bow dropped over I saw a huge bare log just under the surface. We jumped it and the motor kicked up as I cut the throttle. No damage, but Old Hickory is not the only lake around here with big wood! I left half a silver dollar sized piece of my lower unit in a stump on Wood Resevoir 2 years ago. The Elk river channel is crazy in the upper end of that lake!
dont jump the bluffs at long hunter. i sank 1 there with the water up. cant go by the bouys, they get moved often without resetting![]()
so what are y'all catching em on there now.........
how close is the sleep inn of Smyrna close to Fate Sanders?
