Painting lower unit - tips ?

My lower unit skeg... actually the entire lower unit... looks pretty bad. A couple deep scratches... skeg doesn't have much paint left... and along the top section it looks bad from exhause fumes i think.

What is the procedure for preping the lower unit for painting with one of those spray cans u can by at the Evinrude dealer ? Should i sand it down first before spray painting it over with new coat ?

Sand with 1000 or 1500 grit sandpaper (wet sand).
    Wipe down with tack rag.
You may have to wipe down with a degreaser before sanding if oil or exhaust residue is present.
Spray per instructions on the can. I do not beleive they recommend clear coat on the lower engine cover or lower unit.
You can wet sand between coats if wanted.
    Turns out great.

Also pick up some etching primer. It's a must if you have any bare metal showing.
And it will help you fill small nicks and the paint job last a little longer!
