    E-TEC 250 H.O. Performance Report

This summer I had a unique opportunity to replace my 1992 Evinrude 225-HP V6 with a 2008 E-TEC 250 H.O. motor. I have made a careful study of the difference in performance between the motors. I also tested the REBEL 17 and CYCLONE 17 propellers against my old favorite SST propeller. And I was also able to compare my traditional analogue gauges to new I-Command digital gauges. The results are far too long to present here, but are published at

where I think many may find interesting reading.

To sum it up as tersely as possible, the E-TEC is faster, quieter, and gets significantly better fuel economy. It runs more smoothly and seems to improve the boat's ride, too. The new propellers perform better, particularly with regard to maintaining grip in rough seas. And the I-Command instrumentation was easy to install.

Outstanding article and a very good read! I did notice two things from your photos, 1 no motor serial number and 2 only single arm steering. I know you will be sad when you have to remove it and go back to that carbed motor. Great job Lockemans' .

The motor actually does have a serial number, but I obscured it in the photo. The side-mount hydraulic steering does a good job, even if it is 18 years old. We typically are cruising along at 25-MPH, so a balanced cylinder, center mount, with high-volume helm pump is not quite as critical as on a 80-MPH bass boat.

As for keeping the motor, let's say I am in negotiations with all involved parties.

Would anyone like to buy a 1992 Evinrude 225-HP in pristine condition?
