    Newby question... Prop shaft movement

First, I DID look through the boards for this answer, but found conflicting info. I have about 3/16" play in my prop shaft when I pull on the prop. It is a '94 150 Rude. I've heard this is normal by some and bad by others... What's the truth? Thanks a million!

I think 3/16" is excessive. This could indicate something wrong inside the case or the locking tabs have moved rearward allowing the rear bearing carrier to do the same. The first thing to do is look at your magnets on the drain plugs and check for metal accumulation, then take notice of the smell of the oil. If it has a strong burned odor, this is another sign something is abnormal due to high friction in the case. If these things check out O.K., I would open the case and do a visual. I don't like to see more than @ .070 of endplay, which is on the high side of normal.

Re: Newby question... Prop shaft movement (gearcaseman)

There was some metal on the magnets. Had a previous reverse gear adjustment issue which caused a little grinding. I figured that was what the metal was from. Won't know till I take it out with fresh oil, I guess. Otherwise, the oil I drained smelled fine. Thanks for the input.

Fine shavings or bigger pieces? If the shaft is moving more than .070 as Gearcaseman states is borderline too much, I think I would have it looked at BEFORE I ran it again JMHO.

Don't confuse prop movement with propshaft movement. Make sure your prop is torqued down to 80 Ft. Lbs. And you have the correct thrust washer for your prop.

Re: Newby question... Prop shaft movement (Bassmeister)

Thanks again for all the help:

The metal on the magnets are "shavings" and I would consider them a bit coarse. Also, I do know what prop SHAFT movement is.

Also, I should add that I just recently lost reverse all together. It was recently diagnosed as an "adjustment" issue (would grind a bit when going in). I had it adjusted but now reverse is completely gone.

Likely a L.U. rebuild? For a 94 150 Evinrude, should I consider the rebuild or just buy a complete one and replace? If replace, can someone PLEASE recommend a reputable source? What should I expect to spend? Thank you.
