I have fished there a few times...when my son was younger we would go up for 4 days every year...the fishing was awesome in the spring. A little slower in the summer but so many things to fish. evening time is a blast!...the bite in the back bays is awesome! I still have my map marked up if you need it. Let me know.

deep weed edges this time of year. Shallow lake and it can get like bath water in this weather. LM get most of the attention but there are good numbers of big smallies there too

Weeds everywhere when I was there (mid Aug.) a couple years ago. As said it's a shallow lake and gets heavy growth. Big bait there is crayfish (the locals call them crabs). We did well with Senko, power worms (pumpkin) and buzz frogs if (acutally WHEN) you find grass on the surface. I just could not bring myself to use live craws.
One thing I didn't like: not a lot of places to stay near the water that are much more than "bare bones" cabins or motels, I think the term RUSTIC is generous. Unless you are cooking your own, food can also be hard to find, but there is a little resturant in Hammond that is pretty decent.
Both smallies and largemout are available, and a few pike on the southern end. Wardens patrol the lake regularly, be sure to have your paperwork in order (NY non-resident licenses are EXPENSIVE, too).
I'm going past you Friday on the way to Canada - I like it up there a little better.
