Boyesen Power Reeds..Are they worth the $

Hey guys I was just wondering who all has bought a set of the Boyesen power reeds and installed in their motors and if you thought they were worth the $ and hassle.I have an 03 Johnson 225 ho and was contemplating buying a set of the power reeds. What kinda performance do the reeds add over stock and about how much does a set cost?Im guessing you have to take the boat somewhere to get the power reeds installed I do know some about outboards but if these go inside the Carbuerators Im not gonna do that myself.LMK what you all think.Thanks.

That is totally up to you, the carbs and intakes will have to come off, and the reeds replaced. You will need new intake gaskets, carb gaskets. You may see a smoother Idle and an slight increase in mid-range punch. Negligible top end gain. Benefit, if a reed breaks you don't loose a piston. Timing will need to be adjusted. If you have a lean sneeze or a back fire through the carb chances are you may loose a reed.

Not to take this thread off track....but that looks like a 2000 Johnson. The last year for the 225HO Johnson was 2001.

Sorry guys the Boat itself is an 03 the Motor is an 01 my mistake.Im running a 25 Renegade on the boat now and it will turn 6200 rpms if I trim it way up Im thinking about trying a 27 Renegade.Any of you know what the Max Redline RPM is for this motor??Im guessing around 6000rpm..

Actually I really LOVE the boat and how it performs. Its 23' in Length has a Huge casting deck and has enough dry storage that totally Amazes me... It holds every bit of my gear and I still have plenty of room to spare. The only thing I wish was different about it is I wish it had a 300 Merc hanging from the Transom lol..

I have run boyesens in 3 different engines. The difference is noticeable, but if you expect to gain 5 mph, forget it.

I put a set in a 70hp OMC, it was more punchy.

Put a set in my GT175, and it helped it alot. I have a set in my 150 now, but they are ficht reeds, and I am using ficht cages. Much smoother idle, I still need to set the timing, but the engine certainly has more spunk, and I picked up 200 rpms on the top.

I paid 140 for the set in my 150, but I have a good connection. Expect to pay a little more online. If you do it yourself, its not a bad deal, I would hate to pay 60 to 90 bucks an hour to have it done, although I could put a set in an engine like mine in about an hour now.

The limiter on your engine is set at 6700. If you are turning it that tight with a 25gade, you should try a trophy in 26. I think the 27 might be a little steep.

I'm an admirer of that boat, corresponded withe manufacturer several times, nice guy. They only make maybe 5 or 6 boats a year. It only weighs something like 1200# and that 225HO should be able to turn a 27p Tempest plus about 5900 rpm and that would be the max I'd want to run it. Should be an 80mph boat with a 225...................nice rig.......G

Thanks Garfish I really do Love the boat.I talk to DL Moody who builds these boats pretty Regularly and he has almost stopped building them because of health reasons. He will build someone a boat if they really do want one and do have the $$ to buy one.Im gonna try a 27 Renegade on the boat soon and I would absolutely Love to try a 26 pitch Fury on the boat.Besides this newest Fury which props are the best props that Mercury makes I dont know much about Merc props besides all the good I hear about the new Fury..!

I was going to retract my statement about being able to turn the 27 when I heard it was 23'. But after seeing Gar's post about it being 1200 lbs you may want to cup it some. My 225 DI turns a 27 Gade to 5700 on a 1450 lb rig.
