    Mercury warranty

I have a 2019 mercury pro xs 250 four stroke and im a little upset in mercurys service. So i recently had my gear case go out on me with 192hrs on it and my warranty claim was denied because of a chip in the skeg. I called mercury today and they said the lower unit went out because of impact. I explained to them that the boat and motor was on the trailer on the second trip out when that chip happend and i pretty much put over 185-188hrs on it with that chip in the skeg. Well I was pretty much told tuff luck. I also purchased the extended mercury platinum warranty when i bought the boat, now i realize that was wasted money....... if anyone has any advice on anything else i can do to to get this covered under warranty i would appreciate the info!! Them gear cases are pretty steep.

id try the 4 strk forum for your engine with ser number, might add pics , yes they are steep, this bass fishn deal is getting expensive , powerhead failure on that one wont waste your money MERCURY MARINE does have final say on warranty failures any signs of impact damage and your insurance should repllace gearcase as per MERCS resean for fail that will be recorded good luck JOE

It is either a warranty issue or an insurance issue. It is certainly possible that the prop shaft was slightly bent when you got the chip in the skeg. I know it is frustrating but those are your only choices.

My mechanic put a dial on the prop shaft and its straight. My prop doesnt have the slightest chip in it. I just think that mercury should back there product. I have been a loyal customer to them, this is my 5th mercury 250 and its frustrating to know that they dont back their product when we spend so much money on these motors. I understand that insurance should cover it but thats not the point.

Ross- I'm going to move this thread over to the Fourstroke Forum for you.

Please be sure to update the thread with your Engine Serial Number (required when posting). Good idea to post a picture or two of your gearcase as well.

I can tell you that there are very concise/clear standards for Gearcase Warranty Claims. ANY sign of impact results in denial of warranty claim (impact is not a defect). Your insurance, on the other hand, is usually responsible for the costs to return the engine to within Warranty Standards.

BTW: PLATINUM Product Protection is NOT "warranty". It is a Service Contract that covers specific engine components. It is an excellent investment given the high cost of these engines (today).

You must look at the bright side. You have evidence of an impact and your dealer is saying the failure was from an impact. Your insurance will pay for and must use OEM parts. Now, if the dealer said sorry, a seal blew and caused your failure, neither insurance nor Mercury would cover the replacement...you would.

Unless you had Progressive and there propulsion plus coverage that specifically covers lower unit failure.

Unless you repower and put your brand new motor on a 10yr or older boat, then propulsion plus won’t cover it. If that makes any since at all. Whoever wrote that “engine” policy based on the age of the boat sux.

Second Request: Ross, if you would, please take a moment to review the Announcements at the top of the Forum, and provide the Required Info (serial number) with your post. Thanks!

If everything on this thread is accurate, and that shaft was obviously not bent and no result of the small chip on your Scagg, when I’m due for a new motor I’ll be looking at other places than mercury, that is extremely poor backing of a product that is extremely expensive to begin with. If the impact did has something to do with it, then it is an insurance claim, but everything I’m reading and based on history of those lower units, it just looks like a company that does not want to back the product. Good luck to you, and sorry about your luck. I hope I’m not next in line.

Since Ross has chosen to not update the thread with a serial number, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I suspect things aren't quite on the "up and up" with the story he portrayed.

For others that might be commenting or opinionated: If you buy a new car, miss the driveway leaving the dealership and hang the undercarriage on a ditch culvert, are you going to expect them to replace the control arms, tie rods and oil pan UNDER WARRANTY? No: That's what Insurance Coverage is for.

WARRANTY does not cover "It is broken". Warranty covers DEFECTS in materials or workmanship.

Thread closed until or unless I hear from Ross.
