Surf Fishing Help Near Carolina Beach

My wife and in-laws are spending a week in a beach condo in Carolina Beach and myself, and father and brother in-law are looking to wet a line either in the surf or from a pier. Any tips, info, or areas of interest for surf or pier fishing in the area would be greatly appreciated. What type of rigs and bait work best? From what I've found, it looks like this time of year is pretty good for Spanish Mackeral and Whiting. I plan on visiting a local baitshop or two to get the essentials and to get a little more info about fishing in the area. My saltwater fishing experience has previously been limited to a little pier fishing so any help would be great. Also, what type of license will we need for out of state? Thanks in advance!

Cant beat a 2 hook bottom rig baited with "fresh" shrimp. Gotcha plugs will catch you some spanish and bluefish off a pier, just make sure you use a leader, they got teeth, steel or 30-40 lb mono worked for me.

I second the brits recomendation. We use to stop by brits on the way out at night to surf fish, drive out on the beach and surf fish all night and then hit brits again in the morning. Those were good times.

Try Snows Cut at Carolina Beach, you can get a permit to drive on the beach. The two hook bottom rig as mentioned above is hard to beat, with "Fresh Shimp" and I mean Fresh not froze bait shimp. Red headed Gota plug with white body off the Kure beach pier on the end before the King fishermen take over. If you need any tackel check out Island Hardware. Enjoy I'm going to wait a little to see if it cools off
