'01 200 HP ficht knocking in reverse

If i put it in reverse in the driveway, I don't hear anything, but under a load in the water, it's knocking in reverse, knocks even worse if the load is increased, say if I have to help it off the trailer.

Could it be an reverse engagement problem or is it the lower unit?

    What's the bad news?
and how much $$$$ am I looking at to repair?

    Thanks,
    Matt

Drain the fluid , check for chunks.

Re: '01 200 HP ficht knocking in reverse (t-bone)

Probably just the shift cable alignment is out. i.e. it isn't putting it all the way into reverse.

If that isn't it then it will either need lower unit oil or a lower unit rebuild.

Re: '01 200 HP ficht knocking in reverse (oobatz)

I bought the boat used without a owners manual. Come to find out from the shop down the road, unlike Mercs, Evinrudes need to have their gear lube changed 2 or 3 times a season! At high speed it's under extreme pressure, and suffers from damaging heat build up that breaks down the lube. If you make long runs, check, and or change that lower unit gear lube!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will not hold up all season like a Merc and you'll suffer lower unit damage!!!!!!!!!!

Sure enough, I pulled the drain plug to find the magnet covered in metal and stinky burnt gear oil
I'm looking at a rebuilt lower unit.

Some quotes would be nice if anybody has an idea of what this costs, so I know if I'm dealing with a fair shop.

    Thanks,
    Matt

That's funny---I have owned 8 Evinrudes starting in the 1970's and none of them have had to have the lower unit oil changed but once a year. I think I would find another shop---Also like was said before drain it and look for chunks of metal.

Check with Gearcaseman about a rebuild.

    Evinrude Ficht.

If a certified Evinrude tech tells me to keep an eye on my lower unit oil to avoid costly damage, especially if I make a lot of long runs, I'd hardly call that bad advise.

    NOT TRUE!!!!

In fact utter rubbish. To actually say that that is a nonsense. Seems that you have been fed this lie & you fell for it. If the oil smells burnt then it is either the WRONG oil or the gearcase was faulty before you bought it. There is something very suspect here. I would be asking some questions if I were you.

Sounds like the shop down the road is a black motor shop.

Re: '01 200 HP ficht knocking in reverse (oobatz)

ok, then someone please tell me what caused the smelly burnt gear lube and heavy filings on the drain plug??? It smells so bad my neighbor asked me if something was burning!

Something caused the burnt lube, and eventually cause damage, i.e. knocking in reverse

so if the Evinrude tech is wrong like you all say, then what caused it?

You must never have smelled the regular Mercury gear lube after 100 hours in an outboard or a stern drive!

If you get any of that lube on you, the stink stays with you all day, to say nothing of the stain on your clothes. Did that Merc dealer put the regular Mercury lube in your motor, or did someone use an off-brand or automotive gear oil?

From experience I can tell you that E-TEC gear oil after 300 hours does not have a bad smell to it. It does have a slight odor, but nothing like burnt hypoid oil.

Re: '01 200 HP ficht knocking in reverse (oobatz)

first off , getting a somewhat defensive attitude on here is not repeat NOT!!! going to help you get any answers to your problem. if you notice the main gearcase guy has not even addressed your question or such so calm down take a deep breath and let the experts answer your questions.
Now#2: I quote"I bought the boat used without a owners manual. Come to find out from the shop down the road, unlike Mercs, Evinrudes need to have their gear lube changed 2 or 3 times a season! " why did you not call BRP when you got the boat for a manual or at least check with a dealer not the local shop down the road. as stated before the person giving you info is sadly mistaken or whomever you bought the boat from used either the wrong lube or even worse the owner never changed the lube.
#3 : it is really up to you to check things like that BEFORE you buy a boat from anyone or at least pay a hunderd bucks or so to have the motor and lower unit checked out before you buy it. I know I bought a hydro sport with a GT 200 on it years ago, in front of the guy I checked the lower unit fluid and it was milky the guy took off 300 bucks for my finding that came to be a prop shaft seal nothing big just a pain.
#4: if you are not happy with the answers and such from the Moderators and experts here who have a heck of a lot more time fixing rudes and johnsons than most dealer mechanics. Take it to a dealer in your area not the shade tree shop down the road who fixes any engine that comes in the door and see what they say, it may not need a total rebuild as some shavings on the magnet are normal and if the lube has never been changed you will see a he** of a lot more than a normal yearly service would. Good luck and hope you get the answers you want and maybe you dont need a total rebuild.

Re: '01 200 HP ficht knocking in reverse (oobatz)

The burned oil smell is caused by extreme friction/ heat from metal to metal contact, probably from a bearing that has become too tight on it's related surface. This is usually caused by an out of round race or contamination of fragments of steel floating in the oil. The oil itself was not the cause of the problem. Iv'e known people that have run everything from automatic transmission fluid to nothing but grease on all the bearing & gear surfaces and survived the elements of racing. More than likely, you inherited a unit that was going down when you made your purchase. It's happened to all of us at one time or another, Gearcases are just bombs waiting to explode at any given moment, no matter what color motor you have. A small 2" diameter pinion gear is driving over a ton of weight at 6000 R.P.M.'s thru the resistance of water hour after hour after hour. This is part of the world of boating. Did'nt mean to preach, just trying to hit all the bases. Hope this answers your question. E.P.
