    hmmm...I am stumped...lend me a hand?

...so the motor on the boat I am fixing up...Johnson 150GT...is a bit of a bassterd.
I bought the boat from my mechanic. While he has gone through the engine and givien it a clean bill of health...
It has been repainted at one time...put back together, likely with parts from other engines...so is kind of a Frankenstien motor...

I cannot find the model number on the sucker anywhere. The tag is missing and if it was stamped in I sure cannot see it anymore.
    THREE QUESTIONS:
Is there some way to back trace a likely model number from some other part number???

Is there some "secret place" ( LOL) on the motor that may likely might not have been fooled with that may have a stamp or something?

I need the cable that plugs into the engine wiring harness that goes to the control box for the tilt and trim...any ideas?

OK let's try and figure this out, On the starboard side of the motor look at it and see if the power pack looks like a T. Or if you have power packs to both sides of the motor. If you have the T pack it is an 88-91 if not it is 87 and below, also not a sure sign but motor color does come into play too. If it is white or charcoal helps. Generally the tag is on the left side mounting bracket. If your "mechanic" can't tell you what the Heck he's built you are in big frigging trouble. Hmm lets see you can also look at the carbs and bowls plastic carb bowl came out around 87 I think and the studded intake manifolds were around the same time. Serial number won't help much as BRP has flushed that info.

If the engine wiring harness has a big red cannon plug where the key switch harness plugs-in then you need a harness with the big red plug. Any good Evinrude dealer can help you with that. A good E/J tech can certainly help you narrow the year by physically identifying parts just like ChampionMan is trying to do for you.
There should be a core plug (round aluminum piece) on the engine block if it hasn't been removed. It will at least provide the serial number. You may have to take some electrical parts off to find it.

the question is whether it is a 84 or 87

my "mechanic" did not build it...it was on the boat already and he just does not remember 100% what year it is. I would have to drive 1 1/2 for him to look and refresh his memory....you guys are easier!
    He says...and I quote
"84 but dont run to the bank with that...there has been alot of motors between then and now"

    motor is white
    metal carb bowls
    dont have the T pack

the harness I need is for the tilt/trim...the jumper between the motor 5 pin plug and the control box.

Thankx for the help fellas but the mechanic called me back late last night and gave me this number for the harness

I am probably going to take it out to him anyway. Have him order what I need and install it....tune it up, decarb it etc. I was trying to learn a little here but am quickly remembering that while I am mechanically inclined...I have no inclination to be a mechanic.
