    Remembering old baits @ Tillery

I met an old friend a couple of days ago that I hadn’t seen in over 15 years. We got talking about fishing and the conversation led to old baits that we used to use that have been discontinued. I could not get this out of my head the rest of the day. I kept going back through my mind about those great days at Lake Tillery when I was a kid. Mt family bought our cabin on the lake in 1962. To say I’ve fished that lake a lot would be like saying King Kong is a slightly larger than average monkey. See if you can remember any of these baits

A: Original Bomber: Caught fish like crazy on that bait off of the main channel rocky banks.

B: Devil’s Toothpick : Not the devil’s horse but the little toothpick. It had no props on it and floated tail down. Slow twitches around the grass beds were deadly. I still have two of these.

C: Bomber Speed Shad: Great dock crankbait

D: Fat Cream worm: Any color would work as long as it was 10 inches long and purple with a red tail

    E: Original: Lucky 13

F: Super Rooster Tail: Rooster tail built like a spinnerbait. Many a shellcracker were caught on this bait.

G: Mann’s Razorback crankbait: I actually whipped my cousin’s butt over losing my favorite one. Crawfish color was awesome.

I think I'll go down to Tillery next week and spend a week. See if my toads are still out there in my "hole" Last week of June I had over 23lbs off of it in the first 20 minutes of the morning. Did that four straight days.

rb, you must be the lake Tillery curator.

I can't catch a keeper on that lake. Only been there a couple of times, I know I need to spend more time on the water but damn it's depressing.

Tillery can be a tough old bird. Pre-spawn is my least favorite time to fish it. Go back after Labor Day and start out in the back of the creeks as shallow as your boat can go and fish your way out throw a blade if its dingy or swim a worm if its clear. If you go now get off the bank and throw a 1/2 oz football head jig.Call Tim McCoy at 540-980-8248 or his web site http://www.probassshop.net. I use Falcon Lake Craw when its bright or Smith Mtn Lake Spring Craw when its overcast. Tip it with a Yamamoto twin tail

I appreciate the advise and I will be sure and try that after my feathers grow back from the last couple of trips.

Not positive but I think Jetty Tuttle has a couple of those old baits hanging in his shop if someone was interested. If not it's worth going and looking just to listen to some of Jetty's fish tales.

    Thanks,
