    Jackplate Questions

I'm picking up an 07 188vx with a 150 Yamaha Vmax. Boat currently does not have a jackplate on it and I'd like to put one on. If I'm going to buy it I want to get a hydraulic one. I've never had a jackplate before so I wanted to get recommendations on it such as:

    -What size do I need?
-Do they come with everything you need to install and get back on the water? or am I going to have to buy other parts/accessories I don't have any talons or poles but may put one on in the next year.
-Do you usually run power to the starting battery for it?

If you can think of any other things I should know before purchasing let me know.

    Thank-you

You will need a set of bolts to bolt the engine to the plate, other than that,it should be a complete kit. Usually a gauge for the plate is optional,it’s handy but you don’t have to have it. You can power it from the starting battery but it should be fused,I think most need a 30a fuse. Also,a 6” plate is all you need for that hull but an 8” will work.

Need to do some research on the hull/engine configuration 1st and see if that setup even needs a JP. If your not gaining anything by adding one, leave it alone and go fishing.

Thanks for the info. What do you mean by a guage for the plate?

I've seen a bunch of them on this model so there's gotta be an advantage. I also get into some skinny waters, and fish different sized lakes so I think the jp would help.

This would be a digital gauge on the console dash that shows the position of the plate at the moment. Saves you looking behind the boat to see how high you have lifted the engine, or “driving blind” as to engine height.

I had the same boat but the 175 vmax. I added an 8inch atlas and didn't gain any performance. I also added a talon. With the tandem axle trailer it messed up the tongue weight alot even with the winch post as far forward as it would go which was a real pain. This doesn't really answer the questions but might be something to consider.

OK thanks for clarifying that Jc. I definitely want one of those. Is that something that's aftermarket or do I buy it from the manufacturer?

The same people who sell the jack plates also sell the gauges. Atlas gauge for Atlas jack plate, etc.

I put this one in for a Bob's plate. I moved the key switch to the right and put it in that hole. I had to make it bigger tho. The Gauge, wiring harness and sender come as a kit and can be used on many different plates. Now I know how much above or below my ideal Prop to Pad I am.

Very nice. Thanks for the picture for reference. I'll be adding that to the list.
