OK so who's throwing it in MO?

yep, the umbrella rig. I realize it is a 3 arm bait. Whos tried it on our MO lakes? What was the success/failure?

before knowing the rules I threw a homemade one (5arm) once and caught one short fish on it. didn't give it much chance, but did catch one.

You can only have 3 baits attached put spinner bait blades on the other two

Rodney it just says not more than three hooks, you can put a bait on two of them without hooks. Just a thought.

We've been talking with local Conservation Agent, If you put your name on the rod, like a trot line, He said he feels it to be legal. The next agent may not have the same opinion. He's been styuding the books and can't find a reason it would be illegal if you put your name on the pole. Just the local noise around here. Hi Derek, meet you at Pomme last spring.

Re: OK so who's throwing it in MO? (MuleCat)

same thing was said by a local agent here.......no more than 3 hooks per rod......so and I quote

"if you use the A rig with 5 hooks that falls under OTHER Methods OF FISHING which means........Put your Name....Address and phone number on your rod and you are legal"

We went thru the MDC Rule Book that all agents go by (the little blue/green one) From front to back and the A rig is NOT a illegal bait even though it has 5 hooks.in Mo.

"it just falls under other methods of fishing......just as a trot line.....limb line.....jug line and so fourth in which UP TOO 33 hooks may be used unless on the Miss. River then its up to 50 hooks".

All you have to do is put an ID tag on your setup
Now as far as use in a Tournament.......that is up to the Director whether it be allowed or not.

    Now here's my opinion.......

if you want to go out here and catch you a mess of crappie or something to eat (everyday fishing) then I don't see a thing wrong with it, but to keep it on the SKILL level and knowledge level of competition.........lets ban it from all fishing tournaments and stick with what has been used for yrs and yrs.....put a ban on it from the local bass club all the way up to the Pros that way you have to rely on skill and knowledge

So every time something new comes along we just ban it. Imagine what we would be using if they would have said that about rubber skirted jigs or suspending jerkbaits or what about swim baits. You still have to find the fish, throw that thing in the right spot, and get it in the boat, if it bites.

    Re: (Missouri Jay)

easy now, it is not banned for anything except the BASS tourneys.

The rules are stated in every states rules and regulations. we just have to abide by these rules. Nobody is banning anything yet.
I was just curious on results of the rig in our state. wondering if it has been effective for anyone here like it has been elsewhere.

I agree Jay!....Gerald Swindle said all he caught with it was a sunkin christmas tree and an empty beer can!

Oh, just give it a year, it will probably slow way down after every fish in the lake see's 40 to 50 A-Rigs a day pass by in front of em', it probably won't take them long to figure out "Don't bite the 5 shad that are swiming behind the aircraft cable"!!

You have to go to the "Definitons" section of the book.......

Pole and Line: Fishing methods using tackle normally held in the hand,
such as a cane pole, casting rod, spinning rod or fly rod, or ice fishing tackle
commonly known as a tip-up, to which not more than 3 hooks with bait or
lures are attached. Does not include snagging, snaring, grabbing, trotlines,
juglines or other tackle normally attached in a fixed position.

.........and I think it would be hard to convince an agent that you are using "other methods"....if they know the spirit of the law....or they may just not care, more likely.

If you are desperate to throw the 5 hook A-rig, truth is you probably won't get caught, based on the odds, unless you are in a tournament.

Still not getting an answer to your question...just debate on whether it's legal and how it's legal, etc, etc. I've bought 4 of them.....will see this spring how they work, if they work. I'll throw the thing all damned day if it catches fish, and I don't care who's banned them, unless it's the DNR.

Ozarkbassin I like the way you think. I am buying a couple this weekend. If the thing catches fish, I al throw it all day as well. I don't care how stupid it looks!! Fish in the livewell is all that counts!

Re: OK so who's throwing it in MO? (herk91)

I threw a rig today for the first time. It's not magic, you still have to be where big fish are to catch pigs. It took 28 lbs to win, 22 lbs to get $, and you better have a rig to compete. These results are posted somewhere, I didn't fish that one. I only fish for $$$$ at night.
I was on a different mo lake. I had 7 over 5 pounds, 1 over 6 pounds, 2 brownies over 4 pounds. My 7 year old son caught 3 that I couldn't make go 5, 4-14, 4-12, 4-11. I'd throw it, put my arm around him and hold on to butt of my stick.
The best 5 would have been in the 28-30lb range.
rumour has it when the water temp hits 41-42 the bite will be gone, it's still upper 40's down here.
Every boat was throwing a rig, most the illegal 5 bait. I built a 3 bait this week, that doesn't look like anything anybody else is throwing to my knowledge. Last weekend I threw a mega bass and caught just as many fish as the rig guys. The condition today was perfect, pre front, foggy until noon then clouds, 15 mph wind. A rig thrown into the wind will kick your butt but it can be done.

Unfortunately this is what I figured would happen. I don't foresee a solution anytime soon either since its next to impossible to tell if someone is throwing 5 baits with 3 hooks until you get up next to them. I guess its like anything in the outdoors people who want to cheat to get an edge will. Add to that at least around Wappapello I've never even seen an agent out on the water, only checking limits at boat ramps, if someone wants to use it I doubt they'll catch much flak. I'm certainly pro A-rig I just would like a level playing field for all involved.

Re: OK so who's throwing it in MO? (WIUbassin)

On our border lakes the 5 is legal in AR, and you think they're going to cut 2 hooks mid stream is a joke. It's not a lure, it's a rig, PERIOD!!!!!!
