    What Grade gas should I run in a 1985 115 V4 Evinrude?
    Is 87 ok?

I have a 1985 150 GT that calls for 93 octane. I just put in the premium fuel. Could I also use the 87 midgrade instead???? Would sure help the pocket book with the high gas prices.

Re: What Grade Gas (Ranger 85)

Unless it is a tweaked race motor then 87 is ok 89 would be better with the ethanol but that is just an opinion.

I think, if you look closely at your owners manual under

    Recommended Gasoline
Use gasoline with the following minimum octane specifications:
    RESEARCH OCTANE NUMBER (RON) 93.

I once thought 93 (RON) octane was Premium fuel. But, the fact are; Generally, octane ratings are higher in Europe than they are in North America and most other parts of the world. This is especially true when comparing the lowest available octane level in each country. In many parts of Europe, 95 RON (90-91 AKI) is the minimum available and the standard, with 97/98 being premium or "super" (except Italy, which hasn't adopted it because of its pollution) [citation needed]. In Australia, "regular" unleaded fuel is RON 91, "premium" unleaded with RON 95 is widely available, and RON 98 fuel is also reasonably common. Shell sells RON 100 petrol from a small number of service stations, most of which are located in capital cities. In other countries "regular" unleaded gasoline, when available, is sometimes as low as 85 RON (still with the more regular fuel - 95 - and premium around 98 available.) In Russia and CIS countries 80 RON (76 AKI) is the minimum available and the standard.

Gasoline pumps typically post octane numbers as an average of two different values. Often you may see the octane rating quoted as (R+M)/2. One value is the research octane number (RON), which is determined with a test engine running at a low speed of 600 rpm. The other value is the motor octane number (MON), which is determined with a test engine running at a higher speed of 900 rpm. If, for example, a gasoline has an RON of 98 and a MON of 90, then the posted octane number would be the average of the two values or 94.

High octane gasoline does not outperform regular octane gasoline in preventing engine deposits from forming, in removing them, or in cleaning the engine. Consumers should select the lowest octane grade at which the car's engine runs without knocking. Occasional light knocking or pinging won't harm the engine, and doesn't indicate a need for higher octane. On the other hand, a heavy or persistent knock may result in engine damage

    Re: What Grade Gas (ChampioNman)

I have a 1990 johnson 175, but no idea what gas is best to use. Anybody have an idea?

The reason I ask is because I'm having problems with it starting while on the trailer. Its almost like its not geting enough spark (although the battery is charged), or I'm not putting the right gas in there? I've been putting the cheap tuff in not even thinking about the ethanol.

87 octane is just fine, if it is an un-modified engine.

Does ethanol have any adverse affects that I can treat against? All the pumps by the lake have ethanol.

Other than keeping your in line fuel filter / water separator changed annually, I don't know of anything other than the normal BRP gas tank additives . . . also, I am religious user of SeaFoam but, I don't think either will do much more than your close observation of the conditions of your fuel lines and fuel filter changes.

Starbrite has a product called Startron. It claims it reverses the effects of ethenol in fuel. I read that Stable has a new product out now as well that does it all.
I've used Stratron for two years now. so far so good. I started using Seaform at the beginning of this year. I think my motor is starting alittle better now.
