Johnson starter problem

I have a 1988 150 GT Johnson VRO motor that I'm having trouble with the starter.It tries to start but the gear on the starter most of the time just spin out without engaging the flywheel.I have tried to lubricate the shaft that the gear rides up,but it doesn't help.Do I need a whole starter or just the gear on the starter?Where is the best place to get the parts?Thanks

It sounds as if you have either a weak battery or the starter is dragging so it will not spin fast enough to sling the gear in place. I would start by taking the starter off and taking it to a good auto electric shop and let them test it for you. they can repair them if needed. Make sure the battery connections are clean and no wing nuts.

Yes, starter or battery connections or starter itself! You need a fully charged battery that is delivering it's top CCA to ingage the starter.
