What w.o.t rpm's are you running and what's the pitch on your prop?
Sounds like your running a bit to slow. Should be close to 48-50 mph with that rig and engine.
Just removed it and bought the new XPS rod socks . I don't believe that the rods will break or get damaged without the rod rack tube, but always use the rod sock on all the rods to prevent the lines...
