The position you rotate the 360 shaft is known. So the 360 image on your unit is also displayed in the same orientation. Takes a bit of getting used to.

I make lots of good butt conections with solder and shrink tube. No failures for me, but read where soldered are not recommended. What am I missing?

Try a reset. Home page, then settings. Reset sonar defaults.
Worked for me on my Solix.
I strap my 360 to the deck with a rod strap.The pod is positioned on one of the two foam packing pieces Humminbird uses to sandwich the pod in the shipping box.
My gauge was also different than the nema readout. Simple fix with a screwdriver in the back of the gauge to calibrate.
