Like was said above, change it and run it like you stole it. Only a short period of time to get the rings run in. If not, you could be "making oil" for the rest of the engine's short life span.

Hmmm. I didn't know the 250 SHO had been in production for 24 years!
My 2015 225 SHO powerhead blew at exactly 300 hours......one day after my dealer serviced it. It "made" oil from day one.
"My point was to follow the manual"
I followed the manual precisely as the oil rose on the dipstick between every service on my 2017 225 SHO! I bought an oil pump and pumped oil out multiple...
Try LMC Marine Center in Houston, TX. They move a bunch of engines. Certainly worth a toll free call!
I followed the manua"s break in procedure on my new 225HO when I bought it new in 2017. It "made" oil until it threw a rod through the crankcase at 300 hours, one day after the Yamaha dealer...
Yamaha motors do not really have a model year. Rather, they have a build date. The model year is simply what year the customer buys the motor......
I know an idiot who was going to try it with a drill.........oh, wait a minute! Too late. He done done it!!
Obviously, there are two schools of thought debated ad nauseum on how to break in a new SHO. I put a brand new 2017 225 SHO on an older 22 Pathfinder. After reading all the debates I could find, I...
I need to send a Merc prop to him for a little work, and have tried calling 2 or 3 times, but never get an answer. Is he still in business? If not him, are there any other suggestions for a good...
That is why I said 4.2 SHO's, and not a specific model. Mine, in fact, is a 225. But I can't get Yamaha to explain why it seems so many of the 4.2 SHO's blow powerheads. They won't even admit...
I blew my 225 SHO at 300 hours a few months ago. When I took it to my 5 Star Yamaha service center under warranty, the first thing he asked me........."was my ECU original?" Hmmmmmm.
Are the 4.2 SHO powerheads disposable? Yamaha had to replace mine 3 hours after my Yamaha dealer serviced it at 300 hours.
Mine was an oil maker until about 175hours.
Does anyone know why...
Buy a pump on a bucket. Easy peasy! Connect the alligator clips to your battery, insert hose down the dipstick hole, turn pump on, and sit back and take a few sips on your adult beverage. Nuff...
Hmmmmm. I must have asked a naughty question. All I wanted to know is in general, what is the cause for the majority of the 4.2 SHO powerhead failures. Right, wrong, or indifferent.
Stop the ring free! For maybe 100 hours.
I just blew my 225 SHO up one week ago. It just hit 300 hours, and I had my Yamaha dealer perform the 300 hour service on it. Then.........it slung a rod through the block. Fortunately, it is...
