orange lake(or should i say orange marsh)
who ever is in charge or our water ways has finally turned orange and lochloosa into another newmans lake.the main lake is over 5' deep in mud with about 12' of clean water above it.
congradulations to all!!! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/crying.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/crying.gif

I don't think the water managers can make it rain. The lake is controlled, as I understand it, by a fixed-crest weir rather than a dam.

There are things that could be done to help the lakes but they choose not to http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/mad.gif

What do you have in mind?
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (Olebiker)
there is a dam at the southeast corner of the lake but there is also a sink-hole that is pulling water out as we speak and there is nothing refilling it.
i know we have been in draught but seems to me if all that muck was removed (which everyone knows what has caused that)you could still navigate around the lake.also (edit) up around the sink-hole.
i don't really know the answers, but what has been done certainly gasn't helped
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (astromax99)
I was just reading this afternoon about how the prairie lakes in Florida used to dry up and the muck would actually catch fire and burn off leaving the sand bottom.
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (Olebiker)
Build a (edit) around the sink hole with some type of dam so when we get 4 hurricanes in a year we can save the water and control the level,The damn that was referred to was to help the lakes build the powers that be only let orange get 20% of the run off because the creek is man made.It all for paynes praire
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (210blazer)
Unfortunately, we live in a county where planting trees and using taxpayers money to buy "environmental lands" is more important than spending money to maintain an awesome resource so future generations can enjoy it. I would love to know the amount of fish in the lake 7lbs. and up and, I would bet it would compare favorably with any lake in the world per acre. Ultimately we have to save the water from the sinkhole, stop the over spraying of hydrilla, and get the mud out to return the lake to sand bottom.
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (Ranger1991361v)
my final say of this matter is,the mud or muck whatever you want to call it needs to be removed before these lakes can return to normal.
this was man made and not natures doing.sure we are in a draught situation but there are some lakes(sante-fe) that is still high enough to fish in.
i've lived around these lakes all my life (57 years) and used to swim in them of course they then had a sand bottom.they are fixin to lower rodman so why not divert the water to orange lochloosa and newmans.so see things can be done!!
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (astromax99)
sad to say that the state of florida is the real problem...the folks that could do something to help, only care about money, and votes...saving a great fishing lake is of little or no concern to them, or the folks that continue to elect them.....they have been trying to drain one of the last great lakes in florida for years now...thanks to the efforts of a small, but steadfast group, and one man...its still there...we have had several govenors over the past 15 years that claimed to support our lakes and rivers...but once in office, they turned the other cheek on us...when i look at the way texas, alabama, north carolina, and several other states have stepped up to promote their great lakes, i am ashamed to say i live in this state..the st. johns river is a prime example..we had an initiative to clean up the river, and now it is the worst it has been in over 20 years, and we still allow crap to be dumped into it....and i aint buying all of the DROUGHT crap either..seems like all the spring water companies dont have a shortage of product...and goldhead sand mine is for sure responsible for sucking some lakes dry in the keystone area...i could rant all day....but untill we unite as sportsmen in this state...and demand the quality management we have been paying for....it wont change... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/doh.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/doh.gif

Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (ldbass55)
I'm from NC but love coming to your state and fishing when the weather is bad here. I can only compare your Fish and Game folks to ours and I can tell you it could be allot worse. Florida fish and game is managing a resource 10x (maybe bigger) the size of the one here in NC and I think they are doing a fantastic job in comaprison. As someone mentioned it has allot to do with your state government and here NC fails again. We still allow inshore netting!! I'm sure it's frustrating when you know things can be even better but come to NC and you can see allot worse. I've haven't made it to Orange Lake yet, I've heard the good stories and the bad, hopefully they will get it right and I'll be able to fish it at it's peak. I'll be contributing to your state economy Thanksging week.
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (jnaumuk)
I hate to say but it probly peaked about 20-25 years ago! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/doh.gif
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (blackcreekbasser)
nope,it has been through this before and came back it will again.I have fish with guys that say it was better last year than it has ever been, some of them are pretty old too.
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (210blazer)
I hope so Jody....I have never seen it,as good as last year.
Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (Frogchunker)
it almost went dry back in the late 50,s....but it is said that the sinkhole was filled with whatever the county could find to dump in it...concrete, school busses, and somehow they got it stopped....and the lake was stable through to the 90,s..i guess maybe we are not as smart as we used to be...i have been told that there are at least 6 sinkholes in the lake now...but i still say the one at heagy is taking the most...

sounds like a good place to wreck a few dozen concrete trucks....
the dirty little secret is that, if the fl aquifer was in good shape, it would be pushing water UP into the lake....too many people in fl for the aquifer to support..coastal desalinization plants are the only thing that will bring back the water levels of our lakes to the original levels.....jmho http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif

sam is right on this one...they are already trying to find places to take water for the orlando area..isnt enough supply there now, and the city is growing...something george carlin said years ago may be coming to light..

Re: orange lake(or should i say orange marsh) (ldbass55)
not sure about the (6) sink-holes but the one at heagy beary is definetly pulling the most.bottom line is that the muck(settlement) has got to go to have a healthy lake.(they did this on panasoffkee and griffin).

But yet the state will spend million of dollars to dredge and widen the kiss. river from hatch to kiss. I went thru there all week last week and it looked plenty deep and wide enough to me. JMHO
