I've been doing some Mexico bass research recently. I'd like to make the trip happen some day...
Hi 18Ranger -
I have been doing 3 trips a year for the last 5 years at El Salto and Lake Baccarac. Nothing like it. We usually go to El Salto the Sunday after Thanksgiving for a 6 night 5 day fish. This has been the prime time of year for Top Water (Frogs, Rio Ricos and Whopper Plopper). We also fish Under Spin Swim Baits, Flukes, Big Deep Cranks, A-Rigs, Jigs and C-Rigs. Just got back from El Salto Sat Dec 1 and boated 900 fish. Largest was 10.5 with a ton of 7,8 and 9+ pounders. This years trip was about the same as the previous 4 years in numbers and size. Did lose 2 bigger fish on C-Rigs as they came unbuttoned at the boat.
The next 2 trips will be a 7 night 6 day fish in late January and again in late March at Lake Baccarac. Past trips we have caught bigger fish and huge numbers. Last year we caught 1100 in January and 1400 in March. Baits used at Baccarac, Top Water (Rio Ricos and Whopper Ploppers) a great bite on Jerk Baits (Vision 110+), A-Rigs, Under Spins, Cranks, Wacky Senkos, T-Rig and C-Rig. At either lake you will be ho humming 4-6 pounders by noon the first day. Last March using an A-Rig I had a first, caught a fish on all 5 baits on 1 cast. The total weight boated of all 5 fish was just over 30 pounds, just unbelievable. Can't say enough good things about the Mexico Bass fishing or the operations down there, they truly are top notch and go the extra mile to make a great trip.
On my Bucket list! Sounds awesome. All my fishing buddies think they will get kidnapped. I told them there wives would pay the hijackers to keep there asses.
Did a Picachos trip few years back..with Ron Speed. Awesome time :thumb up2:
Nah....you know when you throw a square bill at any piece of wood and you get slammed, or you catch 10 fish out of one tree...
your in fantasy land. What it will do, is clue you in as to how pressured our fish are. Virgin unpressured bass are easy to catch.
Can you give a roundabout price for the week? Total price, not just the resort
Oviachic is my favorite lake. Picachos looks interesting
I can only speak for the Anglers Inn properties, but any trip to Mexico will spoil you for life. They can't control the weather or the fishing (although it's usually exceptional) but the service is amazing.
Happy to answer any questions privately.
Sure it’s been brought up before, but how safe are the resorts? What about getting there?
I've been to El Salto and Picachos a total of about a dozen times and never feel unsafe. They pick you up directly inside the airport and you travel on a major highway -- once you are there, there is no reason to leave the lodge. We leave our doors unlocked and never suspect any issues. My brother (who does not fish) came with us last year and plans to bring his 9 year old son. I'm sure there are problems on occasion, but that's the case in any destination, whether that be in the US or abroad.
I've been to El Salto twice both times with Angler's Inn. Transport to and from the lodge to the airport, I never felt unsafe in the van or at the lodge. Everything from the food to the facilities was 5 star. Employees at the lodge and the guides were very professional. The fishing was incredible (first trip in May lots of big fish, second trip in January smaller average size but 100+ 2 to 4 lb fish a day) Overall not a single complaint either time can't wait until I book my next trip.
