Put all you tackle to the rear of the boat. If you load up the front compartment you will lose performance. I stored my life jacket, paddle and rain suit up front. Also, I would put some worms/senko or stuff I would use all day in front for access.
Dennis, what are you getting for numbers with your merc and what prop are you running now?

While waiting for Dennis' response.....I'm running 71.9 (hot, humid summer) fully loaded with 2 good sized adults. Hitting rev limiter. 3.75 below pad and 1/2 sized trim extenders. Took trying three 26p tempest plus props to get it right.. I think I could get 73 in better conditions ...ie, less heat and humidity...and with a 27p. I keep heavier gear in rear compartments...

Lea, Thanks for the info. I'm running a 26 tempest with the trim extensions also on my pro xs, I'm just not seeing the same numbers as some of the other with the same set up??? I'll just keep trying I guess.
198 with 225 hpdi 25 tempest best was a shade over 73 mph. 2 men with gear 69-70. It is weight sensitive and into the wind the hull grabs a lot of air with that wide beam.

Greg, what is your prop-to-pad measurement? Play with that while watching water pressure...and move the heavy stuff to the rear compartments...
Lea, I'm at 3.75 below pad which is where it should be. Its probably just driver error!!

I can answer that since I own his 198 and he now runs a 200. This 198 has seen 74.0 light loaded by myself. I am 6'3" and 215 lbs. I run 70 consistently in the heat of the summer. I usually am not too worried about 1-2 mph, so I keep all my stuff up front. In tourny's with a big load and 2 guys, I put all the heavy stuff in back...I'm running a 26 tempest that's been worked.

She'll walk a tad when aired out....and so I just trim down a hair since I have not really tried to learn to prevent the walk. When we got the WOT figures, I was not driving. We were trying different props, and the friend of mine who is the prop guru (Robbie Patterson http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/bows.gif ) did the test driving. I generally keep it at 68 or less (esp when gas prices climbed so high!!!!!).

I had some walk initially. It went away as I raised the motor and steering became easier.

I am not getting close to those numbers. I have a 198 w/225 Pro XS and all I can get by myself and half a tank of gas is 70.4, and that was when it is cool. With 2 people and a tournament load I am lucky if I see 68. I need to work on mine, but I refuse to put my tackle in the back. That is the reason I quit running Rangers and bought another brand before my Champion.
What is your engine height/rmp's/psi when full throtle? You could have a bad prop too, if you have access to a different tempest I would try it. Are you getting plenty of bow lift with a little walk or not?
I think you are close....you should be in the low 70's running a tournament load. 70 at the very least.

As long as you have good water pressure(15psi or above at WOT) don't be scared to raise that motor a little at a time,the 198 has a sweet spot, you'll know when you find it.Mine will run 72mph lightly loaded with a 25T1.I will be doing some more test runs with a worked Tempest as soon as the ice comes off.
I pushing 5800 - 5900 rpms and the psi is 20-25. I am not exactly sure what the height is. I am getting some bow lift, but no chime walking at all. I feel like it needs to go down some more. I fooled with it this weekend some, but the fish were calling me so I had to fish.

Lea can you ellaborate, more on the 1/2" extenderes.
The extenders are not full size. I never measured to see if 1/2" or what. They were installed by the dealer ... he referred to them as "C&O Special". As a starter, some folks simply glue some washers in the spot (one guy used quarters) and experiment with the number of washers till you get the optimum performance. I am speaking only with regard to Mercs. I don't know anything about the other brands.
How in the world do you guys and gals fit all your gear in the tiny back compartments (my biggest complaint with the 198 is the tiny back storage compartments). Maybe I am a bit of a packrat, but the 3 back compartments are full, the main center compartment is full, 1 rod locker is full of rods and the other gets my leftover tackle, any co-angler stuff and pfds. The drift socks, spare clothing and water proof tool bag gets thrown in with the batteries.
No wonder my boat can't even hit 68 with a full load with what a lot of people said is one of the stronger 225's out there (2004 Evy HO).
I think weight sensitive is an understatement as full livewells and wet carpet from the rain can cost me 2.5 mph as well.
It's also a bummer that to fill one livewell you gotta fill the whole thing which is a massive amount of water. Good for the fish, bad for performance. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif
