Are you trimming up?
motor is too deep?
raise the motor. you might even pick up a few mph's.
It's hard to say. My Cat doesn't throw much of a rooster tail at all when running wide open. Sherm drove it last fall. I was watching on the dock, waiting for him to pick me up. He had it at 79.9mph and the tail was maybe 1-2' tall. So some boats don't run the best trimmed high enough to throw a big rooster tail. I've heard many say the rule of thumb is not higher than the engine. I have no idea if that applies to all boats or not.

I've heard the same thing.. Something along the lines of: If it's higher than the cowl your waisting forward thrust? And that seems to be the case on mine as well..
Might be a different story on the lighter/performance hulls (Allison, Stroker, Bullet, etc.) though?
edit: after watchin that Tennessee river run vid, it definitely looks like a Bullet runs best with a big tail! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

You should be breaking 70mph with that 389 and 175hp. Anyway, like other said some boats just don't let the motor throw one. Some boats won't run right unless it's high and soaking people around you...my Charger 195vf is one of those boats.
Thats interesting highcentered as my old 195 ran level with the top of the motor and hooked up great....what motor and prop you running? have a plate on it?

low to mid 60s. heavy boat
If a boat is setup perfect, weight, prop, prop height it will have very little tail.

high rooster tail to some may "look cool" but it is happening due to improper setup. the prop is blowing water in the air and not thrusting the boat forward. you don't want a high rooster tail. tail should only be about as high as the cowl.

Yamaha Pro V 200, Solas HR Titan 4 (Yamaha m25 before a rock ledge took it out), and yes it has a plate. The Titan started throwing a big rooster tail after I vented it to make it come out of the hole quicker. It's about level with the motor but ventless it was only a few inches tall. with the m25 it was tall and wide. Any lower on the jack plate and it wouldn't lift right. It was also WAY overpropped and still overpropped with the 23p Titan. That's one reason I joined this forum so I could get the most out of my boat. Whatever I end up with for the new boat I hope that with the help of this forum to turn it into a screamer.
My question is, who can turn around to see the rooster tail while driving at WOT? http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eek.gif
I have that boat and even with the hydrolic j/p
I had no rooster tail. So maybe the hull design.

My last boat, a 97 skeeter with a 150 duo prop would throw a tail when it was topped out.
Now i have my javelin 400 with a 200 on it, has a little tail when accelerating but once i have trimmed up and raised the plate to run WOT it has very little tail behind it.

If you look closely, what looks like a big rooster tail is surfacing prop spray. The tail is usually not very high.

stroker owners can with one hand on the wheel http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
took me a while but I can now
3 1/2" off the pad with a 13 1/2 X 23 renegade prop, 6 inch High Jacker manual jack plate, Plate is set in the front hole. Some are saying to raise the motor half inch, some are saying to move the jack plate to the back hole, how many rpm's should this 94 175 evinrude be turning.
David
My 93' 389dc with a 175 Intruder ran 67 radar after Lee Sanderson did the setup. I had a 10" jackplate with the Renegade. Your motor is in the right area at 3.5". The motor would turn around 5,600 in cold weather and at 5,400 in the summer. You have a lot of slip. How are you loading the boat? What condition is your prop in? A improper rebuild could be a problem if you don't know its history. Try either a known stock Renegade or try a 24p Raker. A Raker will give you better bow lift and maybe another mph but the Renegade handles better.
a 4 bladed prop creates stern lift which an OMC hull doesn't like. These boats like as much bow lift as you can give them. For the most part, outside of a few setups, the 3 bladed original Raker prop is the best prop for these boats. I have a 379 with a 150 with the raker and it runs in the 67-68 range. I would think the 389 should be in the mid 60 range with a stock 175. 3-3 1/2" is right where the motor should be on these hulls.

Thats not correct. Strat/Javs need all the stern lift they can get and just enough bow lift to run clean.
To the OP: Do not worry about rooster tail, set the motor at around 3.5" to 4" below pad with a GOOD Raker24 or Gade25 and enjoy.
once my boat gets on plane and is running wide open, i have almost no rooster tail.
as long as its running good don't worry

CORRECT. The very WORST thing you can do to a Stratos is lift the bow way up in the air. Moderate lift is good ... standing on it's tail is NOT.
So many different answers
Just curious but why are you just responding to a post from 2012 today?
things must be a little slow in newman .. took 4 years to decide there were no correct answers on 5 different threads..
May want to raise it up some. Optimal tail is about the height of the top of the engine.
My rooster has a tail but I don't know if my boat has one. I'm always looking at where I'm going, with my luck if I looked back I'd hit something. It sure wouldn't be the first time, my boat is half patches.
Well......5 years later it could be anything. Lol
Is this thread about roosters or is it about tail?
my son has a 389 javelin with a 200 efi on it and it runs 72 gps with hardley any rooster tail. he could prob get a lil more speed if was running a 3 blade prop---he running a 26 trophy plus.
