First time out this year. Tried out the homemade Alabama Rig and they delivered! 19" smallie that was a chunk. Interesting markings on the side though. Just wondering if anyone has an idea what this was from?

We catch alot fish like that in the hot pond... We always thought it might be linked to the warm water and well balanced eco system.
I've seen those black splotches on smallies in Erie, in Georgian Bay on Canada, and just about every other place I've caught smallies. Noted In-Fisherman author and fisheries biologist, Ralph Mann's says they are simply changes in pigmentation and can come and go on a fish over time.

Sore from a parasite that have healed I believe.
I have heard many biologist say that is a sign of a healthy fishery when you see those spots.
I catch quite a few largemouth with those markings on them also, for the most part i only see them on fish that i catch, where there is a coal plant or nuke plant nearby, that heats the water.
Bob - this is a 600 acre lake. No power plant anywhere nearby.

I cant tell but are the spots like this ?
There are several speculations .... Diet, PH in water, genes .......... None are about fungal nor poisons from nearby plants. I did read something about the mix of LM and SM caring it over to the SM breed.

That's the explanation I have heard. I've seen those splotches on largemouth and on smallmouth. I've seen it in Indiana lakes, Kentucky and down in Bama as well.
