Doctor or chiropractor?
I am not a doctor guy. Don't have a doctor and havent been to one in probably 10 yrs or so. Ever since my college football days I've had lower back issues. I am now just fed up and going in. So would you see a regular family doctor or go to a chiropractor? Excuse my medical ignorance

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
Doctor.....you will regret any other choice.

I'd go to a physical therapist to see if it's something you can work out. I had an issue and went to a physical therapist and he gave me a bunch of exercises and stretches that got things back aligned and pain removed. My friend went to a chiropractor and just get's adjusted and it only last a few weeks and he's back. I haven't gone in 3 years I just do the things he told me to and I've been fine.

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
My worst episode with my lower back sent me to the hospital in an ambulance. That was probably 20 yrs ago. The doctors x-rayed and examined my back and sent me home with some pain medicine. I started going to a chiropractor not long after that and have been going ever since (now just once a month to keep me loose). I'll still have a flair up about once a year or so, but after a couple of adjustments, it usually eases up. So, based on my experience, I'd recommend the chiropractor. I'd also say, that since you've not been to a Dr. in a long time, you might want to start there. Your mileage may vary. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
I used to think chiropractors were pretty much wackos. But several years ago, I had a good friend refer me to a chiropractor. He has really helped me out. On the other hand there are no doubt some back issues that warrant a medical doctor's attention. It's a tough call. If you have someone who can recommend a good chiropractor, I think I'd try that first. I'm currently going to my chiropractor as I have some symptoms of carpel tunnel in my right arm/wrist. I want to try to avoid having that surgery again. (had it on my left hand last May) My left hand has never recovered totally. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/ohwell.gif

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
Depends on what you want to do. Doctors don't like Chiropractors & more than likely will just want to cut you open and try and fix you. You have nothing to loose by going to a Chiro first. I have lower back problems and they have helped me. An honest chiro will tell you if his treatments can do anything for you.

I would try a family doc to start with and see if he sends you out to a specialist. I have heard good things about Dr. Felts.

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
A Dr. who like mine is also a Dr. of Osteopath (sp?) It worked for mine when I started having shooting pains in my right leg. It took a couple of visits and he also gave me some literature on streching excercises that help also. Good luck with it! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/USA1.gif

You beat me to it. Find a local DO. We are fully licensed doctors like MD. our training includes manipulative therapy.

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (fishindoc)
Go to a doctor.
Get an MRI.
Assess from there.

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (bassinbrad)
Doctor of Chiropractic, Doctor of Osteopathy, or Doctor of Medicine, It doesn't matter until you find out the problem. I'm a Chiropractor and treat many DO, MD's and their families. We pretty much all get along these days. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
dchance I tore a muscle in my lower back in my football days. Situps are the most important thing for me to keep my lower back feeling good. Chiro can tell you just as much maybe more then a general doctor.

They should. If they can't... find a different Dr.

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
Go only to a Medical Doctor. Chiropractors are a bit above Witch Doctors, because they do have some training. Don't be afraid to go to an MD. There are many treatment options for backs these days. He will probably refer you to an Orthopedist, but you will be glad you went. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
You need to go to the doc first. There are some serious issues that you can have that may manifest themselves as "pinched nerves" or bone pain.

Joe thats not fair to say, we have a Chiropractor that replied to this thread, a little respect please.
You may not have had a good experience with one or more but putting them all in that category is wrong. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthdown.gif

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (Wags186)
Sorry about that, but what Chiropractors call "adjustments" damaged my wifes back further. Utilmately she was treated for a bulging disc in her L-4 vertebae. Problems this significant are not treatable by Chiropractors. This is only my experience along with my opinion. Sorry if I stepped on anyones toes, that was not my intention.

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
I have had back trouble for years and only go to chiropractors. I know it's a short term remedy but I have brothers that have had back surgery and still have back trouble. Seems to me when you cut something it only weakens it that much more. Anyway, that's how I look at it. Good luck and hope you get to feeling better.

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (tenngator)
Doctors and Chiropractors are just like outboard mechanics and cooks....some are great and honestly care, and other just plain SUCK. I've gone to chiropractors since 1961, for things they can help me with...and medical doctors for other things. A good chiropractor will tell you straight up if he can or can't help you. JMHO, but I prefer Palmer School of Chiropractic grads, I just like they way they adjust me.......

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
Well I checked with my doc 1st and was referred to a chiropractor to get straightened out. I've been to the chiro twice for 2 different issues and wouldn't hesitate to go again. Gotta have a doctor you are happy with. As we get older we need a doctor you can trust 'cause it won't be the last time you will need one. Your insurance may dictate who you see first.

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (Jack'D)
A True Chiropractor will NOT make an adjustment without a complete work up...Then make adjustments slow until you feel like you did in your twenties Whe mine adjusted my neck I was able to breathe like never before....Can't wait to specd the money to get a complete work up a return to being adjusted

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
Chiropractor. They don't push drugs to mask the problem.
-
Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (dchance)
If you haven't seen a doctor in 10 years, you should go there first to make sure it is your back and not something else that has referred pain. then after the medical all clear, see a chiropractor. I used to think they were snake oil salesmen but after one got me back to work after being off with an injury for 6 months, i firmly believe they have a place in health care.
-
One of my close friends and fishing buddy is a Chiropractor. He has a good working relationship with many of the physicians in town and they frequently refer patients to him. However, some other physicians are so biased that they will not refer anyone to him and instead just mask their patients problems with drugs. That being said, my friend is also highly critical of many other Chiropractors, as they do not uphold what he defines as the highest professional standards and are more concerned with getting the most $ from patients.
Since you don't know have a regular physician, as others recommended, I would go to an Osteopath who is trained in both traditional medicine and manipulative techniques. Talk to friends and family or consult others whose opinion you trust. Make an appointment and if you are not happy with their recommendations, seek out someone else.

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (Quickrelease)
Chiro worked wonders for me!!! Doctors only belive in strenthening the muscles around the area to give it support, which is good.. BUT the area must be restraightened and kept straight till the muscles are strong enouth to keep it there.

Thanks for the 1st grade name calling http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/ohwell.gif I now realize the 9 years of college education qualified me to be a quack http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif To the BBC's that have had good things to say about my profession, thanks. Chiropractic is like anything else in life. There are the great, the good and the bad. A referral from someone you trust and has been treated is a good start. Chiropractors are doctors and can diagnosis. A diagnosis is the 1st thing that needs to be done. This is achieved by history, physical exam, orthopedic and neurological tests done in the clinic. If imaging is indicated then that is ordered. If your problem is one that is treatable by chiropractic methods then you will see great results. If you problem is severe then medical treatment including surgery will need to be done. The vast majority of cases are treatable. Along with treatment exercises and stretches are usually recommended. I have helped thousands of patients over my 20 years in practice. I also have seen folks that needed to see the surgeon because their condition required that level of intervention.
It always amuses me the amount of disinformation about chiropractic. It is always rewarding to see patients turn their lives around with sound advice and treatment. Masking your pain with drugs will only lead to worse trouble. Best wishes on finding a solution to your problem.
One other thing I will add is the safety of chiropractic treatment. Lets just say our track record is awesome compared to medical procedures. If you don't believe then find out about malpractice rates. Chiropractors pay much lower rates. In 20 years I have never had a claim brought against me. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif

Re: Doctor or chiropractor? (mikeva)
My wife was in a bad wreck in her Accord. She barely missed hitting a senior citizen's bus head-on but did hit a rock wall twice and a telephone pole. The car was not recognizable.....the air bag saved her. She was taken by ambulance to the closest ER and checked out, then I immediately took her to my Chiro. He X-rayed her and thoroughly checked her spine, gave her an adjustment. The next day she was barely sore and went to work......
I had a terrible sinus headache one day so bad it hurt to move my eyes. I let work early and drove to my doc. I'd also had terrible heartburn all week that Tums wouldn't touch. When he was examining me, he mentioned "You have heartburn pretty bad, dontcha?" I left a few minutes later with no headache and no heartburn http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif I totally believe in Chiros for things they can help with. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
