Don, 300x Temp Question
Probably normal, but I gotta ask since my 250 EFI ran a little cooler at speed..........
2001 300x, OT235158, S/Master, 1.62R, 32P Pro ET Wheel, trimmed at various angles (doesn't change temps).
Water temps while running at 5K RPM around 155 and around 130-135 at low/idle RPM's. Doesn't seem to high but don't really know since it's my first 300x........ http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
Gary I have a 225X not the 300. My temps are about the same as yours. 160ish around 5500 and 140ish when ideling. Don and I have discussed it a few times and it seems to be normal. Will have to wait to see what he says but I would think they would probably be close to the same.

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (RoadrashPaul)
Thanks Paul, I kinda thought it wasn't that high either, but had to give Don the last word on it......... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
Hi Gary, mine idles at around 750 RPM's and under 120F, I have to check how it does at high RPM's

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (NAVISPEED1)
155 while running is a little high, mine runs between 118-122 while running and that is 100+ degrees outside and 90+ water temp....mine is anywhere between 120-140 at idle....
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (RDM0535)
Mine is a 05 and the temp is usually 125-130 at high speed
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
No expert that sounds high to me, when on plane in warmer water 70 degrees mine runs 111-113. At idle 120-130. They havea 120 thermostat in them, at least mine does.
My overheat alarm comes on around 158-160

About the same here as Ontt

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
Gary:
Are you running the STOCK poppet/tuner/adapter plate?
If so.... those temps are a bit high, and I'd be checking the poppet valve (as well as verifying WOT water pressure is within spec).
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)
Good morning Don,
Poppet is brand new & stock, brand new OEM water pump on 3/2011. Pulled the poppet out and double checked everything inside it, no issues there. I am running a HydroTec Tuner on a stock adapter plate. Water pressure at idle is around 5 PSI and at 5K runs around 13 PSI.
Not that it should matter but I'm running 15" of set back and 1 1/2" above pad.
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
Gary- you might want to check with Eric about this. If I recall, he HIGHLY recommends the Poppet Diverter when utilizing that tuner... it's equipped with a 3/8" restrictor (if I recall correctly).
You may not be able to expell adequate coolant otherwise... affecting your "on-plane" temps.
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)
Thanks Don, I'll give him a call today.
One other question on throttle plate/idle, manual states throttle plate should be open .018, is that measured using a .018 dia. pin or feeler at the FWD center of the throttle plate ????
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
A DRILLBIT or PIN, grasped with a pair of Vise-Grips, can be used to measure the gap at the AFT (rear) of throttle plate.
Highly recommend the vise-grips.... it's a real PIA if the pin/drillbit falls down into the intake. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eyes.gif
BTW.... where did you get the .018 spec??? I believe the manual states "Contact Mercury Racing for specification/assistance"....
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)
I'm still trying to understand that damm manual, it's like a game show of hide and seek to find information in. The .018 reference is made in the "Fuel Injection Section 3B", page 14 bottom of the page under "OPERATION", Idle Notes.

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)
It's kinda funny that the manual doesn't state setting the throttle blade clearence on the "AFT" side over the FWD side either.......is there really that much of a difference between the two (FWD or AFT) or is it the taper on the blade edge that makes the difference ?????? I would think that they're about the same at the position.
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
They're very close.... but we measure the opening on the AFT end, since the blade will be RISING on that end as the throttle is opened.
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)
That makes good sense, I'll check and set it that way.

Don,
Update.......spoke to Eric and your correct (as usual http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif ), the HydroTec Tuner does require a Poppet Diverter. Thanks for the heads up on this, got one on order... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man) Continued..........
Don,
Update #2:
Poppet Diverter installed (and working) but no change in temps ????? I'm still looking at around 155-160 at speed. I pulled the L/U off last night and the water pump still looks like brand new, so no issues there. I should have the new water pump kit I ordered from you at the house today and I'll put it in regardless of the old pumps condition. The drive shaft seal ontop of the water pump was still in place where I glued it. The stat's (120 deg) performed well on the hot water test, so short of pulling the heads (????) I'm at a loss as to why the higher temps, let me mention that there have been no alarms or faults recorded due to over temp conditions on my DDT. I'm just going by a visual display on my analog gauge which I tested and compared to an IR heat gun and it was close +/- 5 degrees..........

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man) Continued.......... (Nikon Man)
What are you getting for WATER PRESSURE at:
IDLE:
WOT (5500+ RPM's):
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)
Water pressure at idle around 5 PSI then 10-12 PSI at 5K-up. I might also add that there is no restriction for water flow in the L/U, checked it and flushed it.

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)
Update:
Spoke to Eric on the Diverter dumping at idle and he said there should be "NO" water coming out at idle. So I'm still at wit's end here.....I'll pull the Poppet apart again and look for a problem with the rubber inner seal as Eric said that's what's causing the water to dump. It all went together smoothly, but I'm not perfect and might have missed something, so I'll have to look again. I'll follow up afterwards..... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/ohwell.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/ohwell.gif
While were talk'n bout my motor, after I pulled the lower I looked up at the Tuner and noticed that the Starboard side was wet and the Port side was dry. Pulled all 6 plugs and they all looked exactly the same "dark brown" and slightly wet ?

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
Yep , I had the rubber o ring in the wrong spot the first time as well. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/doh.gif
Definetly dont want any water coming out ofthe diverter at idle
-
Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
Not uncommon (one side of tuner appearing more damp than the other).
Correct the seating problem at the poppet diverter, and it should help to correct both your water pressure AND your cooling problem. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)
Thanks for that info Don. I'm on it to replace the Poppet Assembly. I'll let ya know if it's a done deal once and for all........I could use a little break on this temp issue.......... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
Thx,

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)
Update:
Went out yesterday after re-installing the Poppert Diverter and a new water pump...(old pump still looked like brand new).....Idle temps still around 130 with water pressure @ 5 PSI, now at 5000+ RPM pressure now at 15-17 PSI and temps down to 150 from around 160-165.
I don't know what changed anything but, I'm leaving well enough alone. Poppet still flowing a very slight amount at idle which Eric said shouldn't but it's ok if it does.
These temps I feel are very reasonable for my motor, and beside I'm getting tired of chasing my tail on this one......... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif .
Thanks to Don, Eric and everybody else who had some input on this.......... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Don at what temp does the overheat alarm sound on these motors ?
i thought mine was 160 but could be wrong

It varied depending on the specific calibration- but usually is somewhere in the 161-165 F range.
Gary- glad to hear you've got your temps well within acceptable tolerances. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Re: (EuropeanAM)
Don,
I'm pretty pleased with it as it is now.........don't know what changed anything because it was all right to begin with......... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif
