Quantum Superlite 7' med (mod/fast)
Code reel 7.1:1
10lb Suffix mono
Want to upgrade the reel, but it's served me well. I've been using the new Xcalibur square bills lately and really like them...cheaper and pretty much the same as the LCs from what I can tell.

Re: Squarebill rod/reel/line (481VSangler)
Jeff, since you have that wide an assortment of squarebills, as you use them you should write a synopsis of your opinion on them..likes, dislikes, how they track, ability to bounce off of stumps, etc.
It should make an interesting read... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif

powell squarebill rod and KVD reel

Depends on the bait and cover.
For a Lucky Craft BDS 3 or RC 2.5 I like 15-17 florocarbon. I throw them on a 7m rod.
But for smaller wood baits like a Dbait I use 12lb copolymer or 15copolymer if its heavy cover. I throw them on light 6'6m rod.
There isn't a best combo and line for every squarebill in every situation. Fishing rip rap and fishing thru heavy brush are much different.
-
Re: (Fntsyfbgod)
Which rod I use depends on where I'm fishing the square bill. If it's in more open water say in rip rap, piling or isolated stumps I'll use a Powell 706CB with a 5.1 gear ratio reel; if I'm fishing heavy timber (lay downs) then I'll switch off to the 684CEF with a 6.3 up to a 7.1 gear ratio reel.

yep!
That's why I have 2 setups for cranking as stated above, the 685CB & 705CB http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Re: (OhioChamp183)
I throw a square bill a ton. Have over the last 5 years. Normally I throw it on a G. Loomis CRB783, Loomis, GLX MBR782, or GLX or IMX MBR843 if in cover. Only time I use the CBR783 is when I am throwing them on main lake points where there's no cover since that is a light rod... http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Squarebill rod/reel/line (OhioChamp183)
7' St.Croix Premier M Crankbait
Shimano Citica E
The lake I fish the most is very shallow so squarebills and coffin bills have been the biggest part of my crank fishing. Before the above setup I had a Daiwa TD2 on a Team Daiwa rod. The St.Croix rod has made a big difference. St.Croix rods are the best.
I think in more open type water a 6 ratio is better. In stump fields the 5 ratio seems better.

Re: Squarebill rod/reel/line (OhioChamp183)
I like the poll on the KVD deal... I don't think it was his bait that won the classic (althought it may have been since I have a buddy that caught a 7 on the second cast with that bait), I think it was him switching to it the fastest and the way he was fishing it. He had enough of the baits that he coudl repeatedly get hung up, cut them off, tie on a new one and keep fishing whereas the other guys did not. If you noticed during the footage and I think he even commented on it, the way he was catching a lot of the bigger fish was he was hanging the bait on the stumps repeatedly and ripping them off. If one hung, he just cut it off while the other guys were going in to get there bait.
If you noticed Remitz and the Federation guy were both throwing squarebills, as were Martens and Rook. The difference is that they did not switch until nearly a day after KVD I believe. I may be wrong though so I bought a few of them anyways..

Yep, I really like the longer rods. Everyone is different so it is probably what you get yourself the most comfortable with. I two hand roll cast unless I'm pitching/flipping and the longer rods just work better for me. I have bad wrists so I can't one arm cast anymore with any accuracy anymore. I've found that my accuracy has dialed in from a 3' diameter circle to about a softball since going to the two handed roll cast.
When I pick up the square bill, I am throwing it the same places I throw a jig and then I can also get longer casts when needed to cover flats or open water patches between cover. The longer rod is second nature to me due to pitching/flipping so much and it let's me pitch them into the same type places I pitch a jig (under docks, shade pockets, under overhangs, etc.) Just my thoughts. I have very few rods, maybe 2 or 3, that are under 7'3". I had been using the 7' 705CB Glass or 705CBMF Glass but since going to the 765CB Glass I don't see myself going back. Thinking about trying another graphite rod though after seeing Civicrr's post on the 764 RMCB Rod on a different site...
