I decided to go into the US Marines Corps. I will be getting sent to quantico, Va to go to officer training since i have a 4 year degree in school. Guess this will put a little damper on my 4-5 times a week fishing trips huh.....But I think I made a good decision. Hope all is well

John, you have made a good choice and if you have any questions feel free to ask me, I have 23 years of combined enlisted and officer experience behind me in the Marine Corps. I worked at OCS from 94-95 so I can fill you in on what to expect when you get there. Good luck!

Start running now, get your body ready. Take it to the point of exhaustion, the more you sweat now the easier OCS will be. Run now, whiles it hot in the middle of the day.
Remember OCS is a try out, its you showing them you are capable of being a leader to Marines. OCS DOES NOT GUARANTEEE you will be a Marine Officer, you have to show them you have what it takes. I can't stress this enough. IT will be the most physically demanding thing you will ever do in your life. Being enlisted and having been an instructor I can tell you , OCS is 100 times more physical than Enlisted boot camp.

I have been running about 4 miles per day and I just finished playing college baseball which was 6 am workouts every morning the past 4 years. I can run a 5 minute mile I'm really not worried about the physical parts of the program. I just wish I knew what I am mentally going to go through. Thanks everybody for your support!
Just be prepared for change, the Mental aspect is that your going into the unknown. YOur going to be exspected to learnt os acrifice yourself for the good of others. They want to see do you have what it takes to lead Marines.
Remember the first speech you ever gave, where you stood up in front of that classroom with sweaty palms and felt like your heart was about to come out of your chest. Bud you aint seen nothing yet. Wait till your standing in front of a platoon of Marines and trying to exsplain to them what you want done, oh and your leading guys who have, puple hearts, bronze and silver stars, and combat Valor insignias. And your the one leading them. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/sweating.gif Mentally you are in for a ride of your life, but can promise you if you embrace it, and except it, and do your best o excel. It will be the wildest ride of your laugh and you will love every second of it.
As far as what your saying on working out, please dont take this the wrong way, but brother you aint seen nothing yet. OCS is the most physically demanding thing you will ever face, its alot of physical activity, and its not like sports. Running in Boots for long distances, Swamp Obstacle Courses, its going to be grueling even for someone in shape. Even guys who run long distance college level track struggle with the physical stuff. Its not BUDS but it is tough.

Yes, your schedule will not be yours for awhile but if you keep it all in perspective, it will be wildly rewarding!
I've been in uniform now for 28 years and a commissioned officer for the last 14. I think finishing up my last year was a good choice too. I dont want to regret lookin back and sayin i shoulda graduated first.

Heed Rob's advice. You have the running aprt down part it looks like a 5 minute miles will put you in the middle of the pack. You need to ensure that you have the stamina to do that for 4 hours or so. Some PT can last that long and then you are expected to perfrom with academics the rest of the day. That is part of the mental aspect that they impose on your.
Again, when you do get weekend liberty, let me know and I can move ya around. Beats walking to Q town!
